Two bosses, one 'American ideal': Bruce and Barack make a podcast

Streaming giant Spotify on Monday unveiled a new show featuring two American cultural heavyweights: rock star Bruce Springsteen and former U.S. President Barack Obama.

Two episodes of the eight-show audio series "Renegades: Born in the USA" are now available online.

It's a marketing coup for Spotify, which has focused on podcasting as a growth driver since 2019, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into acquisitions.

"On the surface, Bruce and I don't have a lot in common," Obama says in a promotional clip for the series.

"He's a white guy from a small town in Jersey. I'm a Black guy of mixed race, born in Hawaii. He's a rock'n'roll icon. I'm... not as cool."

The pair met for the first time during Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and have since become friends.

They recently spent several days in New Jersey recording the show together, creating what they hope to be a reflection on the state of America and ways to "unify" a nation rife with political and socioeconomic divisions.

"What we discovered during this conversation was that we still share a fundamental belief in the American ideal, not as an act of nostalgia, but as a compass for the hard work that lies before us," the 59-year-old Obama says.

"We found some answers, learned a few things, had some laughs, and a few drinks."

The former president's foray into podcasting follows that of his wife Michelle, who found success in the medium last year, notably with an episode that brought the pair together on air.

The new show is produced by Higher Ground Productions, the company the Obamas founded in 2018 that has also worked with Netflix on television and film projects.

In December, Spotify also announced a partnership with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who will produce a podcast series for the platform.

Also on Monday, the powerful streaming company announced it was expanding its services to more than 80 new markets worldwide, nearly doubling its reach.

New countries where both the free and paid-subscription options will be available include large population centers like Nigeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Both are good people. Equal in coolness as well.

Tony Danza was unavailable? But both of these guys are/were “The Boss” at some point.

The Obamas are now really moving across all media. Surprisingly, their “American Factory” documentary tells all sides of the story; Get it “On NetFlix!

Maybe Dean Cain can fly in on wires wearing his Superman costume while carrying the Duck Dynasty crew on his shoulders as Ted Nugent plays the guitar, and Diamond and Silk sings the national anthem with a Kid Rock remix.

For those trump supporters suffering from economic hardship because of trump's policies, they can pawn they personals with Rick "Pawn Stars" Harrison at the next trump rally. Roseanne Barr will have insulting booth at the event. too!

Talk of alcohol but no mention of Springsteen's recent DUI arrest or his upcoming trial? Seems like a deliberate omission by AFP to shield the former president from controversy.

Which was weird - he had 0.02 BAC, but the law where he was is 0.08 BAC.

Lol.

It’s sad that was thumbed down. Has it got to the point where people can’t accept a joke at their own, or their preferred politicians’s expense.

Not as funny and a bit childish with the whataboutery, but the same goes for that

Not weird when you consider Springsteen refused a roadside breathalyser test. If the 0.02 was recorded hours after his arrest and processing, it could still indicate that he was over the legal limit at the relevant time.

Nobody cares.

You could have one beer and fail one of those. Plus, who hasn't driven drunk or buzzed at some point?

When I saw the Rolling Stones in 2015 Kid Rock was the opening act. His shirts and jackets had a very obscene phrase on the back. He was selling swag calling himself (and whoever wore it) the dirtiest ugliest insult word in the American and Canadian Rnglish lexicon. He was practically calling himself that word, shaming himself like nobody else could.

I stay away from idiots like that, guys like Kid Rock have no respect for others - not even themselves.
