American TV is abyhsmal, it is the worst i have ever seen in terms of low quality, banal and stupid progams, violence and crude content, gross and immature or just bad "cartoons" that belittle and debase just about everyone. I think the nation would be better off without ANY TV since the news media is all dominated by extreme politics and refuses to report objectively any more. The only thing i watch is the weather channel and even that is becoming a lame reality show.

Enough is enjoy. I watch anime happily and ignore the daily media.

compared to Japanese TV (gameshows on top of gameshow) its excellent, at least there is a huge variety. Japan TV is made up of annime, cooking and game shows & a few dramas where most of the actors cant act. LOL

TV is just crap, both in Japan and the US. Its just a stage for dysfunctional people to be gawk and laughed at. I'll take the internet over TV any day.

American TV is abyhsmal,

I assume you're not including cable, which has quite a few decent shows.

I

Having given up my cable service five years ago because of the exorbitant cost of dozens of channels thrust into even the most basic package that I never watched and never would, and then having given away a perfectly good larger-screen TV, I can say unequivocally I DON"T MISS IT! Except of course for Super Bowl, but I can watch that at a pub, or with friends at their house.

@TrevorPeace2 Spot on. Oddly enough it's not the cable companies doing either. A lot of it's greed by the large conglomerates that own large chunks of the channels. Cable companies are forced to put channels in the basic package or else they won't be allowed to carry the channels they really want. (I.e. Disney channel is a basic tier channel because ABC/Disney tied it to rebroadcast rights for the local ABC affiliate. Want ESPN, you have to lump in ESPN Classic and half dozen other channel of dubious popularity). Those costs get passed directly to the consumer.

The fact that we are forced to accept these channel packages is nonsense.. i've been in the position that motyrah mentions, having to accept a plethora of channels I don't care for so I can get the one that I actually want. Can I get that channel by itself? hell no says the customer rep guy over the phone.. its blasphemy to think otherwise and all the cable companies are doing it!! Us as consumers have no say in the matter and unless there is a huge movement towards the cable free case, these companies won't give two s**** about us

most things can be watched online when you want to not when the tv companies say you can and if I'm ever in a position to cut the cable i would!

at least. Japanese Tv if fun. not full of communist propaganda or hanna montana.

I only watch like 10 shows on TV, and most of those I could be watching online, any time, anywhere.

Usually, my TV is on because I'm playing a video game.

@cris

American TV is abyhsmal, it is the worst

So which TV is better?

i have ever seen in terms of low quality, banal and stupid progams,

With over 100 channels, if you can't find ANYTHING, then I think it's a more of a problem with your taste selection and not the actual program.

violence and crude content, gross and immature or just bad "cartoons" that belittle and debase just about everyone.

So which country has violent free TV or cartoons? What is your definition of gross, and grudge content? Critiquing movies, TV, liking them is purely subjective and Opinionated, not based on actual facts. If you would say "in your opinion" I wouldn't have a problem with your statement.

I think the nation would be better off without ANY TV since the news media is all dominated by extreme politics and refuses to report objectively any more.

Especially, from the 90% controlled liberal dominated media, that is true, ill give you that one.

The only thing i watch is the weather channel and even that is becoming a lame reality show.

I always thought TWC was a useless channel IMO.

Enough is enjoy. I watch anime happily and ignore the daily media.

There's a lot of crappy anime that you have out there as well.

They should be worried and should companies worldwide. News that has no reporting, just parroting official versions, reality shows, quizzes and awful dramas and comedies. I used to watch a lot of tv mostly from the US and the UK, now it has mostly lost its appeal to me. There are obviously talented people out there but they are made to pander to the lowest most of the time and follow current trends.

Other than movies, my cable box goes unused, and I don't watch the trash on regular tv except for morning news(for the weather, also unnecessary ) and the occasional J-variety slapstick show(mindnumbing). Got books?

Can't remember the last time I watched TV. At least 2 Olympics back.

Tastes vary, but some shows that I like that may appeal to CrisGerSan, who derides American TV, are Person of Interest, Elementary, Adventure Time, Regular Show and Archer. Violent, sometimes yes, cartoonish, maybe so, but save for the last, there is a heart beating in each that makes them enjoyable to watch. There are more that I watch, but some that do turn me off. I do not like to see evil glorified.

Turned off all my TV four years ago; no inspiration to go back. Like the article says: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Internet; missing nothing I care about.

Philosophically irked by my Lifetime TiVo & ReplayTV memberships, but whatever. Gave away all my PVRs; using WiFi connected PS3 and a Mac Mini hooked up to my 42" LED TV. Occasionally watch stuff on an iPad or my home PCs; never on a phone.

Fact is though, I completely forgot you can get free TV via antenna; may look into that just for the technical giggles.

Roku (need very good internet and wifi) is the best and you can pick your own channels. CrunchyRoll and DramaFever on Roku. Korean Dramas are good, but trending worse and becoming more dehumanizing like American TV.

(American TV) I like watching Survivor and Kitchen Nightmares (that's it) -but I use the computer to watch them.

Roku ($50+ one time cost) and many of the channels are free. -Keeps getting better. Try it.

I still pay for basic cable, but only because it comes as a package deal with my internet service. My tenant watches the cable channels but I haven't had the cable box on in my room since the Super Bowl, and as mentioned elsewhere I could go watch that at the local sports bar.

at least. Japanese Tv if fun. not full of communist propaganda or hanna montana.

Sounds like someone is watching too much Disney Channel (LOL)

Japanese TV is just ridiculously stupid. Too much exploitation of transgenders, gays, and overweight people just to get cheap laughs. I don't find it entertaining at all. The other so-called "educational" shows are often factually incorrect, and the "dramas" are just full of bad hammy acting. The only thing I feel is worth watching is the news.

I ditched my $103 cable bill since 90% of the shows on my DVR were already on Netfilx and Hulu. Not having live sports really sucks, tho. I had to borrow a login to see the NCAA tourney.

The cable I had was just too overwhelming and I'd stick to the same few channels. The guide would have a few hundred channels, some of which I couldn't get but I still couldn't turn them off from showing. You can't really browse for anything new, you just kind of keep going through the pages and wondering what else you might be missing. Sometimes I do miss the late night channel surfing since you really have to know what you want when you go to Hulu/Netflix.

Hulu is now available in Japan... unfortunately not available in Canada (not yet anyways!!).. because the Canadian Networks have these deals with the american ones to show these programs, copywrites and all that.

so even if its online, the companies still have us by the balls..

Go consumers! Don't let the cable companies dictate what you want to see. If they don't give you what you like cancel them!
