UAE bans Disney-Pixar film over same-sex relationship characters

Disney has spent the last 70 years foisting the sexuality of mice upon us.

The United Arab Emirates on Monday banned Walt Disney-Pixar's animated feature film "Lightyear" from screening in cinemas because it features characters in a same-sex relationship.

This is an obvious move because:

same-sex relationships are criminalised in the UAE, 

And as:

Some social media users said depicting same-sex relationships was against the religion and culture of the UAE while others said children should not be exposed to such imagery.

This country's culture and religion must be respected.

Ah yes.....because everything in a country's culture and religion must be preserved at all costs. So female castration, public flogging, infanticide, racist policies, Western music illegal, sexual relations between nonmarried couples illegal, illegal for women to wear pants, criticizing governments illegal, etc, etc. Just some of the illegal activities around the world that stem from culture and religion. In other words, our society is perfect so we don't need to change.

It's a free world

The UAE isn’t particularly free.

It is not permitted to proselytize religions other than Islam. Execution is still on the books for LGBT people.

Never thought I’d see eye to eye with the UAE

The walls have closed in on a serious discussion about this issue.

Sexual content should never be a part of children's entertainment. This movie didn't contain any homosexuality until they heard about Florida's bill banning sexual discussion with children up until a certain, more appropriate, age and the creators of this film INTENTIONALLY INSERTED homosexuality into this kids' film as a response to that bill protecting children.

Um, by your logic, mommies and daddies should never be in movies because it's sexual content.

Disney as many other compagnies jump on LGBT wave but here its a difficult topic as UAE laws (as well some other countries) are based on religion, not created and decided by citizens.

But when it come to my young children, I am very careful about the content they are allowed to watch.

How exactly does finding a completely non-sexual and consensual depicition of a homosexual realtionship innapropriate for children fit in with your idea of accepting and supportive? If you think gay people are weird and yucky and you don't think it's good for your children to see them just say so - we all know what you mean. It's an ignorant and outdated viewpoint that your children will grow up to be embarrassed by but it's more respectable to own it instead of acting like it's not a problem for you.

Disney stocks has been taking a plunge for weeks now. They aren't learning their lesson at all. Get woke, go broke.

It's a free world. Let the people of the UAE decide what they allow in thier country.

But I find it odd that they ban this movie but probably allow movies with all manner of violence.

Glee, Stranger Things, Modern Family, The Wire, The Sopranos, Seinfeld, Adventure Time, Steven Universe... all massively successful shows that have featured gay characters and relationships. You guys do realize that you're very much in the minority finding anything offensive about these relationships in 2022... right?

The UAE is free to make and enforce its own laws. If Disney wants it movies to be shown there, it must comply with those laws.

I don't respect this part of their religion whatsoever.

And it's clear which of our posters are christian religious extremists, who somehow think they're different from the Muslim extremists.

Yes, and according to many people even showing a homosexual relationship the same exact way you would show a straight one is "extreme" and exposing children to sexual content. It certainly says a lot these people that they think homosexuality is inherently more sexy than straight relationships.

Disney has the right to make whatever content they want. Counties have the right to ban. But if Disney continues down this woke path, it’s just a matter of time before the average viewer will tune out Disney. I already have.

I seem to recall, that Disney banned Elton John from Lion King (1994?) because of his homos-xual behaviour. Now Disney is on the opposite side of this table. Surely, they must understand? Surely, they won't be hypocritical.

I presently reside in Florida... haven't been to Disney World since highschool (decades).

It's was cheaper to go to Tokyo Disneyland, last time I lived there.

At this point movies are promoting this kind of reactions as a badge of honor. "Banned in homophobic (and profit inconsequential) Emirates". By how the world is now considering the issue it works as promotional material.

There is a huge difference between people finding "these relationships" offensive versus the pushing of increasingly woke content on children. Most adults like myself accept and support that people can live their lives as they please. But when it come to my young children, I am very careful about the content they are allowed to watch.

How come reactions from the west is different depending on the country. The fact is, even though China has not legalized SMS, an LGBT person is far less likely to be murdered or physically abused there than anywhere in the west, let alone UAE.

Obviously the "anti-everything-Chinese" mentality brews here.

I'm not for the UAE criminal laws against homosexuality, but I am for their laws that allow for certain censoring of movies, films and so forth.

Many countries' governments similarly censor what can be shown or said in the media.

It’s not a G rated movie.
