Toho has announced the July 29 release date of the newest entry in the Godzilla movie series (“Shin Godzilla”), which began in 1954. “Shin Godzilla” will also feature the largest cast to ever appear in a Japanese movie — 328 actors, to be exact.
The names of some stars appearing in the latest monster movie franchise include leading actor Hiroki Hasegawa, 39, as well as Yutaka Takenouchi, 45, and Satomi Ishihara, 29. Kengo Kora, 28, and Ren Osugi, 64, are also part of the star-studded cast, along with former AKB48 idol singer Atsuko Maeda, 24, Sankei Shimbun reported. Th film is directed by Hideaki Anno ("Evangelion") and Shinji Higuchi ("Attack on Titan").
The concept for “Shin Godzilla” is “Japan versus Godzilla.” When questioned about the grand scale of the cast, a Toho spokesperson said, “It’s to exemplify that a massive number of people is needed to battle an equally massive monster — Godzilla.”
Filming took place last August and concluded in October. The huge turnover of actors entering and exiting the movie set caused a humorous rumor among many stakeholders that, “Aside from the Godzilla locations, all of the actors in Japan have disappeared.”

So it has the largest cast of stars in history . . . . . whoopie-friggin'-do. Wasn't there a feature recently about "3" reasons why Japanese movies stink?
Take a look at the trailor, need not say more. Really.

Cool. The JSDF look much better than the toys in the1954 version.

In line with my comment on the "3 Reasons Why Japanese Movies Stink" story regarding typecasting, we've got the usual suspects here - including an ex-AKB member Maeda & flavour-of-the-month (model? actor? NFI) Ishihara.
I see this is as nothing more than the Old Boys' Club trying to justify its relevance after the success of the Hollywood version. Nothing more.

Wow...that looks spectacularly.....average.

looks terrible

Nothing makes me giggle more that when posters come to a thread about a new Godzilla movie rolling out and profer their cinematic expertise with warnings of how bland or awful a Godzilla movie looks or will be.
It's a frickin' Godzilla movie, folks. It's not the next project on Philip French's to-do list.
Perspective, people. Perspective.

OMFG Japanese movies suck at SFX, filled with actors that cant act bar a couple, drama that looks overacted to the point of being funny. yes I know its scifi but at least you can make the scenes look real.

Okay, hear me out. This movie could be good. MAYBE. If its not the same overly dramatic soap opera lighting and camera work yet trying to be serious drivel like 99% of j-movies, they may actually have a winner here. It almost looks like they are trying to make another Godzilla movie along the lines of the 50s style Kaiju movies. Here is the thing. J-moves have ridiculously bad acting, directing, writing, yet they take everything seriously, like they don't realize how bad their movie(s) actually are. If Godzila doesn't take itself too seriously then it could be a good movie. Like we all know thats a dude in a costume again.. right? If The movie makers don't try to play that off as a serious special effects and everyone are not simply Jhonnys in full on soap opera mode, this movie could be fun.

I thought the trailer was quite good. My favourite part was when the actors' mouths were moving but we couldn't hear anything they were saying. If the entire movie is like this, I might go see it.

Will there be a scene of someone running in the rain at night?
It's not a Japanese film without at least one.

NO CONTEST!! :-)

Robert Dykes said "J-moves have ridiculously bad acting, directing, writing, yet they take everything seriously, like they don't realize how bad their movie(s) actually are" I'm just wondering how many J-movies you've seen to make such comment. Are you an actor? director? sensei?
Brian Wheway
Well I might watch it Atsuko san is in it, yep if the trailer is anything to go by ill think ill clean the fish tank out instead. once GZ killed will the meat be on sale in the local combini? will GZ only be killed for scientific research?
jimbly
ugh, when they going to separate TV and movie production and get a proper director to do Japanese movies. This looks like a TV drama with a bit of special effects. I also hate the way every scene of dialogue has to show a facial shot of every actors response and reaction
gokai_wo_maneku
Hey, I wanna be an extra stepped on by Godzilla! Where do I sign up? This movie will be watched for centuries.

Hrm. Just looked at that trailer. All those actors look like they're... how to be nice about this - "in the moment" to me. Those SDF tanks and helicopters could actually be just about the most natural and realistic actors in it. I imagine the stars will be all reverential and serious about it in their PR interviews as well, like veteran British luvvies talking about some Shakespeare they've done for the RSC. I much prefer the way Sir Michael Caine speaks about some of the films he's been in, e.g. Jaws the Revenge:

I actually liked the trailer, thought it was kind of nostalgic looking. I wonder if that is what the director is going for with this new addition to the Godzilla movie catalogue?
I am beyond happy to see Maeda Atsuko in this! And Satomi Ishihara! Very, very cool! Oh, and for all the critics out there, remember, movies are a subjective experience, meaning what one person will love, another person will hate. Be nice to these people, as they are humans just like me and you, trying to make a living.
Dan Lewis
Because more is better. :$
Maybe all the wooden performances will scare Godzilla away?
Simon Foston
Sometimes people can make a better living for themselves if they get honest, constructive criticism as opposed to everyone just being "nice" to them. But I don't think you need be worried, they seem to be doing ok for themselves and I'm pretty sure they won't be looking at this website to see what's being said about them.

For the people who is complaining about the numbers of bad actors in the film, this would be a great opportunity watch Godzilla kill about 300 of them. You should be first in line. It might be fun.
sf2k
A guy in a costume takes you out of the film. A great bad comedy or a bad great comedy? Makes Matthew Brodrick's Godzilla from 1998 a masterpiece. You really have to feel sorry for the Japanese film industry
Dre Hund
The preview feels like a fan preview, assembling scenes from other films. Looks like they're going for a retro look to it. Old fashioned Godzilla. So, those 328 extras. Ahhhh.... You mean DVD extras? Nuck Nuck Nuck.
William Wong
Shouldnt they have robot by this time. Hollywood produce good godzilla. Why this bad godzilla.
KevinMcgue
Is this a recruitment commercial for the SDF?
billyhelper_33
Movie looks horrible. Thought the design and look of Godzilla would have been better than this. He looks as if he overdosed on crack.
And in terms of the actors?.....forget about it. Most Japanese movies and their actors are horrible.
