Kim Kardashian to freeze Facebook, Instagram accounts to protest hate speech

Kim Kardashian West on Tuesday decided to freeze her Facebook and Instagram accounts, as she and other celebrities called on the social media platforms to stop the spread of hate and misinformation.

"Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy," Kardashian West said in a tweet, as she joined the "Stop Hate for Profit" campaign that has pressured Facebook Inc to remove hate speech.

The campaign, launched earlier this year, won the support of dozens of major companies in an advertising boycott of the social media giant.

Kardashian West, a businesswoman and reality TV star, has become an influential powerhouse of social change in recent months, raising the issue of climate change to her millions of followers and lobbying the White House for criminal justice reform.

With 188 million Instagram followers, Kardashian West has one of the top 10 most followed accounts worldwide.

She plans to freeze her accounts on Wednesday. Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company had said it would team up with civil rights groups and experts to develop more tools to fight hate speech.

Other celebrities and actors including Kerry Washington, Jennifer Lawrence and Sacha Baron Cohen also tweeted on Tuesday, calling on Facebook to do more to stop the spread of misinformation, using the hashtag #StopHateForProfit.

The campaign encouraged users to post about the harms that Facebook is inflicting on society and the importance of voting. It includes a 24-hour Instagram "Freeze" on Sept 16.

Things are looking up for the rest of 2020!

FB needs to be more responsible, they've been letting hate groups spout their crap for too long. And Dirtbag Don has been penalized by Twitter for misusing it to further lies, hate and violence.

Liberty ends on another person's nose. And Trump is irresponsible, all he does is invoke violence - an act unbecoming the head of a civilized nation. People need to be more responsible and stop acting like 7 year olds on a playground. Nobody ever told Treasontrump that and look at the mess we're in now!

Just imagine how blissful it'd be if all the celebrities froze their social media accounts. One can only dream.

Disgraceful, whether you agree with her or not. I have not tended to think the virus man made but on a brief read of her paper (if it’s the same person and I am not getting confused) then it seems on first glance quite persuasive.

I don't know if she is right or not either, but remains that they are hiding essential information from the public. They (whoever "they" are at Twitter) are deciding what information we are allowed to have. That's not the kind of world I want to live in

Another celeb famous for being famous. Not interested.

Who cares she is a talentless nobody.

commanteer, was not aware twitter had done so. Disgraceful, whether you agree with her or not. I have not tended to think the virus man made but on a brief read of her paper (if it’s the same person and I am not getting confused) then it seems on first glance quite persuasive.

Twitter just banned a recognized Chinese scientist/whistleblower who worked in the Wuhan lab and escaped to the west. She states the virus was man-made. Despite her obvious credibility, Twitter closed her account. This is what rules against "hate speech" end up doing - keeping everyone in ignorance.

That's a great ideas!all celebrities should freeze their accounts because all they do is spread misinformation and hate and have no idea what they are talking about or what cause they support. They just need sucker fans to obey.

Not a huge FB user and don't have Instagram so not really aware of all the "hate" on those platforms.  Is it real?  Aren't celebs like KK a big factor in all the "haters hating"?

"Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy,"

But censorship and reduced freedom of speech helps democracy? Maybe she should read Orwell. Or get Kanye to read it for her.

Don't let the Internet door hit you on the way out.

Means absolutely nothing. She should just delete it forever.

Smart Move, Facebook must be held accountable for it's lack of concerns over social and privacy issues. I hope that more and more subscribers freeze their acct's until Facebook steps up to the plate and act responsibly.
