First Eddie Money and now Ric Ocasek . . . The music legends of the late 70s & early 80s are now exiting.

Thanks for the memories!

You can listen to The Cars' classic songs today and they still sound fresh, like they fit into the now. To me, that is the sign of a great band. Their sound is timeless.

He was 34 when the Cars broke out with that first album. That means he probably spent almost 20 years doing gigs, starting in high school, up until they made that album and became "overnight sensations." What a tough business.

Thanks for some great music, Ric.

Loved the intro to heartbeat city. Felt so atmospheric

The Cars were great, Ric was a great music Ian, songwriter and producer. Listen to Weezer's first album and you can hear Ric's influence pretty clearly. Thanks for making the world a better place Ric!

Great band and great sound. Always love Ocasek’s shrill voice, but that was offset to the more mellow baritone smooth voice of Benjamin Orr. But nonetheless it’s said to hear this kind of news always.

RIP.

That’s not always true, it depends more on the connections you have or started. I met musicians that started playing late and made it big 2-3 years later, it just depends.

I grew up with the Cars. They were the band that everyone agreed on. Nobody was a fanatic of them but nobody hated them either. You were in the camp that liked U2, Duran Duran, Talking Heads and the Cars. Or maybe Aerosmith, Queen, Foreigner and the Cars. The Cars never fit in with any category. Punk rockers, hard rock junkies, popsters, danceteria types, new wavers, techno fans - all had Cars albums. Everybody in Generation X could agree on them.

In the Navy I had a poster of Ric's future wife Paulina Porizkova on my dorm wall. Their videos were revolutionary and groundbreaking. We studied those techniques in college for my BA in Computer Science. A newer artist from Canada named Lights (who's talented in music and graphic design) made one of her first videos herself and it resembled and hinted at what the Cars did in the 80s. The Cars deservedly got inducted into the R+R HOF last year. During a long vacation I took in July I visited their hometown of Boston for the first time where people call them 'The Cahs'. I am now very sad tonight.

RIP RIC OCASEK. Your car is now in Heaven's garage.
