According to most of the pro wrestling websites I've seen, reporting on this says that Kimura's mother has stated that the scene was totally staged. That in fact it was a setup, and the producers wants Hana to 'heel it up' in pro wrestling parlance, and come off as a 'bad girl.' Originally they wanted her to actually hit the guy, but she talked it down to what was aired (hitting his hat, yelling at him) because she was uncomfortable with the scene and with blending the worlds of puro-resu and real 'Hana.'

If so, and if the producers did set her up on this and then did nothing, then IMO they are culpable of manslaughter at the least.

If people thought that there was no actual script, as they claim at the beginning of the show, then they are idiots.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the producers who pushed her into what she did, threatening her with to sue her etc, coz she was about to say that what she did was scripted.

I actually know of one such situation personally, of a show that was about to portray a family in the way the family did not like, threatening to sue them for damages and to pay for all the expenses of they did not agree to air the show.

It is still happening, I bet.

Reading between the lines, yes, but to say so explicitly is not really how things are done here.

In the UK, for example, I imagine that you would have also read something like the following:

"The producers of Terrace House were asked to comment on allegations that Kimura had been encouraged to exaggerate the scene in which she lost her temper, but they were unavailable for comment."

A slightly more direct approach, but without a direct allegation.

Fuji TV said that under the deal there was a provision in which members would have to agree to all instructions and decisions regarding scheduling and the way the scenes are shot, including how these are edited afterward.

Ok...I get it, reality TV, without the reality.

The network said the agreement also states that if any cast member violates its terms and thus affects the production, they would have to pay for damages incurred, meaning at least the amount of production costs for one episode.

So, play by our rules or pay for it. Harsh, but people had a choice to agree or not, dont agree, they could leave too, that's an option.

The TV network, however, insisted there was "no coercion" on its part,

The average IQ of the viewers of this and EVERY "reality" show is ~60.

That sounds despicable. In wrestling, everyone knows the score and may love the baddie more than the goodie. Who didn't like Giant Haystacks more than Big Daddy? No-one gets death threats for being a Bond villain either. It sounds like the producers were happy for her to be hounded to death rather than step in and save her by admitting the show was fake.

These shows are all scripted and edited to make the stories the producers want.

Back in 1990 a good friend appeared on Cilla Black’s “Blind Date” (an awful Saturday night dating game show in the UK).....every word from the mouths of every contestant was scripted. The winner was chosen by the producer before the show started filming.

A lot of this could be remedied IF these kinds of contracts were made illegal, the restrictions & punishments are INSANE.

This stuff happens with everything in TV, movie, music etc .

Fuji should be on the hook for this one!

All of these so-called reality TV shows are nothing but trash TV - they are all scripted and are conning and just manipulating the folks that watch them.

And that includes the most ridiculous reality TV show ever to air - the one that began on Jan 17 2017 and will end on Nov 3rd...

In Japan, young adults often display very childish behavior.

I have come to the conclusion that this immaturity is often preyed on by companies and groups that seek to direct them into group behavior that is financially beneficial for the companies involved.

Hana Kimura was one such individual...

Following Kimura's death on May 23, Fuji TV terminated the latest series.

And to be replaced with the same program with a different name with the staging and bullying continuing unabated until it is undone by a scandal. Wash, rinse and dry.

There is the staging but there is also twisting and presenting things afterwards as the producers think it will rile up audiences as much as possible. I wonder what's the point because viewers will often find out and eventually get disgusted, but at the same time if it is not "entertaining" enough, many viewers complain that it is boring. I've been watching Below Deck (on Bravo TV) for a while and lately started to realize that a lot of the scandalous incidents are created by editing and presenting matters in a tricky way so that they appear different from what they were originally. Even just conveniently leaving out some small but important details might create drama. From this aspect most media (shows) really are despicable.

Being forced to watch a reality tv show is a form of torture.

Well, let's face it... most people are boring.

Even with money on the line, most people are not going to get up to the antics and bull that most 'reality' shows present. Could you imagine, say, Survivor if everyone just sat around groaning about not having enough food for thirty days? Or Hell's Kitchen if Gordon Ramsay wasn't flipping out on people and calling them idiot sandwiches, etc.? Because he only does that for the US version, the UK version he's quite tame and professional.

But television demands over the top actions and performances by people doing outlandish things. So producers encourage, needle, and edit things to push the show in that direction.

I think they are actually terrified of the general public. One reason for reality TV overseas is that it uses ordinary people, not expensive celebs or actors. In Japan, even quiz shows pay celebs to answer the questions and keep ordinary people out. I do not know to what extent it goes on, but certain viewers have spotted the same people turning up on street vox pops, where a reporter asks "What do you think about charging for plastic bags etc.". This means those people are insiders, tv staff etc. or actors as well.

I think it has become more so over time. The very first big reality TV, the Dutch show "Big Brother" and its off-shoots were not scripted - they just chose volatile characters.

I wouldn't say Big Brother was the first big one. Maybe the first to be multi-national, but really the idea of the 'shared house' reality TV show goes quite a ways back. As a Generation X'er, I can remember watching the MTV show 'The Real World' all the way back in 1992-1993. And many do consider it the launching pad for modern reality TV.

The premise is very similar as well. Take 8 or so young strangers, have them live in a house together. Usually, being MTV, there were quite a few house members who were in the entertainment industry, but not all.

It's reality mind slop, of course, but I would say it can lay claim to the reality genesis title before Big Brother.
