ViVi model Jun Hasegawa meets her match in Taiwan

Popular Japanese-American model Jun Hasegawa enjoyed the spotlight in Taiwan this week during a promotional visit for Avex's local fashion magazine, Taiwan Vivi. Hasegawa appeared at House Nation, a club event held at Taipei's famous nightclub Luxy.

Vivi is a record-holding top-seller in Taiwan, where 110,000 copies of the women's fashion magazine are sold every month, and Hasegawa is a major role model for young girls. The model greeted a group of over 100 members of the local media with, "Da jia hao!! (Hello)."

She said, "Taiwan is a lot like Japan and I really like it. I want to continue challenging different things, and aim to break out worldwide."

At the press conference, Taiwanese Vivi model Sharon appeared with a bouquet for Hasegawa, giving the media a good show of Taiwanese vs Japanese beauty at its best.

JT -- How does someone who is Japanese-American personify "Japanese beauty at its best"?

What do they mean by Japanese-American? Is she half or is she an american citizen with Japanese decent or nationality? Also is Sharron the Taiwaneese girls name? I wonder if that is her birth name..

girls always trying to be something they aren't.

herefornow - Western influenced beauty is the ideal in Japan.

Rie Miyazawa, for instance, seen as the quintessential Japanese beauty in the late 80s, had a Dutch father. Enlargened eyes light brown hair, long skinny legs, pale skin, etc, are considered the ideal. Where do you think such influences originated from?

I doubt Jun Hasegawa will ever meet her match.

wow, I'll take Sharon, thanks :) Many Taiwanese go by their "American name". they basically get a nickname usually during the English classes, then they stick with it.

The club scene in Japan is dead no wonder avex is promoting at a club in taiwan. If Japan wants to increase the birth rate of Japan they need to make activities like clubs and changes to meet the opposite sex possible.

That Sharon has nice shapely legs - not just skinny but her head seems to just sit on her body....I think it must be the photo.

Now there's the racist comment of the day. She was brought up in Japan and her first language is Japanese therefore she is Japanese. She just happens to have one parent who is American. Jun Hasegawa represents 'Japanese beauty' because she is the face for the best-selling fashion magazine in Japan. She doesn't have to be 100% pure Japanese just to satisfy the aryan-race breeders on this site. Most of the developed nations around the world (the US, the UK, Europe, even Japan) are now full of ethnically mixed families.

Who cares. Don't you have anything else to worry about ?

northlondon -- you're a riot. You see hidden racism in everything. Respectfully, I was simply pointing out that I think JT got a little carried away with their hyperbole. That was the hole point. But, in direct reponse to your comment, I don't believe Jun represents "Japanese beauty", whatever that is. She may well be "the face of a best-selling fashion magazine" here, but, so what? She may represent what JeffLee states as the "western influenced beauty", but, in my opinion, does not represent "Japanese beauty" any more than she represents "American beauty". She is a beautiful woman, why does JT need to characterize it as "Japanese beauty"?

Are you guys American or something?

Yeah, I think you're getting carried away, northlondon. I felt the poster's intention was reflecting on the fact that many Japanese consider a 100% Japanese face as 'Japanese' and haafus as curiosities.

I'd love for you to be right. A person's nationality in my mind is where they grew up and where they feel at home. But tell me, when you ask an ordinary Japanese what words they associate with her, apart from 'sexy' and 'model', you're going to hear 'half-Japanese' a lot.

I wish Japan could look upon half-Japanese as the same. But if in other countries with high immigration like Australia, it still takes years and years for that idea to filter into popular conciousness, it's got a long way to go here.

My question for the article... Is 'meet her match' really an appropriate title when the only thing that pertains to is in the last line? It sounds nice, doesn't mean much though.

You have to tell who someone is by their passport and to make things fair, list them in alphabetical order. United States is way back there so if she is carrying both passports, then she would have to be listed as Japanese/American. And no! You do not have to rescind one to take the other at age 20.
