I just looked an image of the map up on Google and this is just the stupidest thing to complain about imaginable. Its a chalk drawing that doesn't show any borders or anything and is hyper unrealistically drawn, if anyone sees something political or relevant to maritime boundaries in it they really need to have their heads examined.

Just edit it already. If you can change Henry Cavill's mustache in Superman, you can easily edit out that map.

Problem solved, here comes the money.

A map in the Barbie movie. Good grief, calm down, it is a drawing.

No, I disagree because it only shows how much Hollywood kisses up to China.

The film is recognizing China's nine-dash line ... which an international court ruled against.

So it's a case of Hollywood appeasing China, and shows China's disturbing influence over the U.S. film industry.

The filmmakers say they weren't making any sort of statement with the Barbie map, but please. The international community doesn't recognize China's nine-dash line but the film went out of its way to include it anyway.

Why didn't they just leave out that dotted line altogether? The Asia part of the map so little resembles Asia that even the Chinese (probably) wouldn't have been bothered by it not being included. They could have annoyed nobody.

Did Disney intend it to resemble the nine dash line or is it just coincidence?

So why include it in the first place? Why not show Florida or something?

Sorry, it's hard to believe it's not somehow economically (not politically) motivated.

Have you looked at the map????

What, are we supposed to avoid all crude chalk drawings to avoid offending anyone?

What if we accidentally draw Florida wrong and it offends the Floridians?

Not the same thing.

Vietnam is complaining about the movie, but not because it shows a wrong map of Vietnam. That would have to be the case for your analogy to work.

Plus, the map in the film is drawn in China's favor over an issue on which The Hague ruled against China.

So the film seems to be kissing up to China -- and very much smacks of Hollywood not wanting to offend the Chinese lest it lose the Chinese market and suffer major economic losses.

Another reason why the Florida analogy doesn't line up with this situation.

Clearly we need to make a three dash line that shows China's proper claim and then we can imagine that that is what is being depicted.

Look at the bloody map. Here it is:

To say that it is "drawn in China's favor" is just ludicrous. Look at that bloody map and tell me what specific part of it somehow favors China????? China isn't even on the map for crying out loud. Neither is Vietnam, neither is the South China Sea. All you've got a a big blue blob that says "Asia" on it and looks nothing like the real Asia.

This is just ridiculous. And I'm saying this as someone who absolutely supports Vietnam's argument about where the maritime boundary between the two belong.

By the way love the car.

"To say that it is "drawn in China's favor" is just ludicrous. Look at that bloody map and tell me what specific part of it somehow favors China?????"

OK. Easy. Get out a map that shows China's illegal "8-line Dash" grab of the entire South China Sea. Now, compare it to the PERFECT inclusion of the ENTIRE 8 LINE DASH AREA in the map. Then ask yourself: are you blind? Can you NOT see the EXACT inclusion of this sea area????

lol. Some people are not blind, but they JUST DON'T WANT to see what's been CLEARLY, OBVIOUSLY, DELIBERATELY INCLUDED in the map right in front of their face for some reason.

China's movie market is worth far more than Vietnam's ire, or any number of Asian countries' ire, for that matter. For a company that seriously blew 150,000,000.00 USD on this tripe concept of a movie, you'd have to be literally stupid not to understand that this is definitely NOT a coincidence, no matter how dumb they make the map itself look.

Why put it in there then you sell out stooges?!

There's no way it will be, but it

Would be great if this movie was a bit sinister, presenting a world that is too perfect like The Truman Show or The Stepford Wives. As it is, it's just going to be cartoony and camp and sell lots of toys.

china; see it like a Native

Replace china with Miami, and picture the wrong side of a firearm.

Bumper sticker I once saw on I-95 in metro Miami.

The movie will be blocked in China for being "non-Chinese", so I don't see why the "line" can't make everyone else in the world happy. It is an overly simplistic drawing by someone with a warped view of the world. Just look at how the map shows the USA. Very little in it is accurate AND THAT'S THE POINT.

Margot Robbie certainly knows how to dress and put on makeup. Definitely. There's a car in the photo? Missed that.

While it's certainly a stretch to say the 9 dash line was specifically depicted in the map, these companies has been caught doing some questionable things for seemly no good reason.

In this case, had Vietnam not protested, would someone be able to point and say "ah ha! There's the 9 dash line!" For some browny points with xi?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Amazing how many people comment on it without looking at the "map", which is a child's scribble with no identifiable countries on it. I couldn't find China, Vietnam or Japan... just a squiggly "Asia." Yes the is a dotted line near the blob called Asia, but there are dotted lines sprinkled across the whole map.

Is it that hard to look at a picture of the "map" in question before commenting?

This is honestly just stupid. First, its the illegal 9 dash line, not the illegal 8 dash line. Second, apart from both being lines with dashes on them they look nothing alike. The real 9 dash line is between Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and China (though in reality nowhere near China). Its in the South China Sea, it doesn't jut out from an Asian continent that is a big blue blob which looks nothing like Asia into the open ocean with no other opposing landmasses that would necessitate a maritime boundary being drawn like the real one does.

This is just ridiculous, not everything is a bloody conspiracy theory.

Won't be long before the Diaoyu Islands are marked as Chinese territory in Hollywood flicks.

Nine-dash lines today, Diaoyu Islands tomorrow.

How in any alternative universe can any crazy notion politicize "Barbie" and "Ken" ?

It's a total nine dash lost the plot

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

“The map in Barbie Land is a whimsical, child-like crayon drawing," the studio said in a statement. "The doodles depict Barbie's make-believe journey from Barbie Land to the real world. It was not intended to make any type of statement."

To politically pretend otherwise is crazy illogical drivel.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Twas a dash of genius.

Now everyone's talking about it

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

And here’s another ‘map’, even worse, bringing only the nine dash line:

Taiwan always whining about China...

Funny, LOOOOOOL!!..

A map in the Barbie movie. Good grief, calm down, it is a drawing. Now, you wanna get upset about a movie it's Pineapple Express. That movie is 100% dumb. 90 minutes I will never get back.
