Cleaned up images, but war is a grubby business.

And that war in the rainy, bloody, muddy, rat- and dysentery-infested trenches was grubbier than most.

Clarity has always been elusive in WWI, a war with puzzling beginnings

puzzling beginnings?

Not really. Too much attention is given to the spark, and not enough to the root causes.

It is an excellent film. One of the veterans interviewed says "we all joined up to have a go at Jerry", like it was a bit of fun, but many of the scenes show the soldiers in a wasteland with dead bodies all over the place. It looks horrendous, and I think seeing it in colour increases the impact.

Looks magnificent, if that's the correct word to use.

In this age of conflict and rage, hopefully we can learn the futility of war and such horrors can be avoided.

Think it was shown on the beeb, recently?
