World’s first snaggletooth girl group formed

You may have heard of the recent dental trend in Japan called "tsuke yaeba," where women get their canines capped to get a crooked set of chompers. If so, you might have guessed that a snaggletooth girl group couldn’t be far behind, and here they are: TYB48.

Eighteen-year-olds Nana, Mio and Rika were chosen from a field of applicants recruited by a dental clinic specializing in "tsuke yaeba." Girls with crooked teeth are generally thought to be cute in Japan, and with TYB48 as fashion trendsetters, organizers hope to encourage young women not blessed with overlapping fangs to take have their teeth cosmetically altered.

The group made their debut concert in Akihabara on April 30, and fans can now pick up copies of their first CD, frighteningly titled “Mind If I Bite?”

nothing suprises me any more when it comes to the japanese 'entertainment' industry...

Should be called "AKA AppleCatchers"

I thought that was a natural thing here in Japan. I have seen many women with very bad "grills" here in Japan.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

So sorry... but crooked teeth is not cute... people pay thousands of dollars in America to get braced for their kids... The Japanese girls are cute with or without crooked teeth.... even cuter with straight teeth

11 ( +16 / -5 )

*braces

With the prices Japanese dentists charge, do they really need to "advertise"? Especially for something so unsightly? In any case, if a professional person needs to advertise, he/she can't be that "professional"...

Yeah but this isn't America. I think its pretty fascinating how in different societies what is considered beautiful can vary so much.

I think its pretty fascinating how in different societies what is considered beautiful can vary so much.

Actually, the international standard of beauty doesn't differ much from culture to culture. Sure, there are fads that pop up here and there, but nothing that usually lasts long. Don't confuse signs of popularity or status with signs of beauty. They are two completely different things.

I'm in that weird section of JT again

9 ( +12 / -3 )

The kind of headline and story that has ya mailing long-gone friends to let em know Japan is still Japan....

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Please, no more girl groups!!! Ahhhhhhhhh!!!

7 ( +9 / -2 )

You gotta be kidding me?

My thoughts exactly.

I've always wondered why orthodontics has never caught up in Japan. I mean I've seen girls and women with braces but very few and far in between. Almost like spotting an endangered species when you see one.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Sensei - I agree.

The issue should be not be teeth, but rather -

"Does Japan need another fairy floss(pun), creative-challenged, fluffy girls group?"

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

What contribution to the degradation of society will Japan make next??

1 ( +3 / -2 )

people pay thousands of dollars in America to get braced for their kids...

More fools them ! I've got British teeth , I wonder if I can roadie for this group

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Yaeba should be called yaeba, because "crooked teeth" and "snaggle tooth" do not accurately describe them, plus they bring unnecessary negative baggage.

A good pair of yaeba can make a girl as sexy as all those vampire chics you see in movies, like Kate Beckinsale or Aaliyah.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

looking at the pic above although small it looks like their teeth are fine...............or are they saying these girls USED to have crooked teeth that have now been fixed..........................

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Not another one. Are they going to expand to 48 menbers? Please don't.

Maybe next week we will see IRB 48...a bunch of grannies with false teeth that dance and sing? come to light. (Ireba 48)

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Wow...dentists now charging money to mess up your teeeth! Then when you get older and wiser they'll charge you to fix them again! Brilliant plan.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

haha, yeah I guess so. But if you think like that, the old saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" wouldn't hold much truth. Me personally I can find beauty in just about anything. It's about perspective.

Heavens to Murgatroyd!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

speechless

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Way to turn a negative into a "positive" Japan!...

"Positively ludicrous," that is...

0 ( +2 / -2 )

TYB48. snaggletooth girls ... hahh where can I hide from them???? Any unoccupied nuclear shelter for rent??

Dictionary definition for snaggletooth. "a person with a protruding, sharp, or crooked tooth. Usually found in the wilderness feasting on household pets. Sample sentence: That is is snaggletooth. I saw her eat a cat and nothing was left but bones. Fur and blood was flying like no other!" (urbandictionary)

Well, well, I've got a bad feeling about it, I think I guess what the next will be. Normally they start high and then go to lower regions, both in quality and bodily.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Braces. Use them.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Braces. Use them.

Oh, please don't say that, don't spoil the show, what would these girls would be without crooked teeth? Who would ever notice them.

This is a great business opportunity for the body care and hygiene industry. Sale of diapers will soar as all the audience has to attend the show wearing diapers, unless they want to pee their pants laughing when 48 snaggletooth girls smile at them at the same time.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

in Japan called “tsuke yaeba,” where women get their canines capped to get a crooked set of chompers.

Back during WW2, the US propaganda machine characterized the Japanese soldier as a very "buck toothed" fighter. If you take a look at some of the old Bugs Bunny cartoons from that era, you can see characters that fit that description.

I guess this phenomena has been around for a long time, and these girls are just trying to bring it back to the forefront. But, if you have real talent, you don't need some gimmick to get noticed, and obviously, these girls probably don't.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Anyone who thinks the standards of beauty around the world are all essentially the same needs to open their eyes.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Sick, sicker, the sickest! What has gone wrong with the otherwise realistic thinking population of this country?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

@Foxie

A new generation has grown up with new explanation.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Yaeba is somewhat different from "deppa" (overbite), although both are a result of having large teeth in small mandibles. I have seen the pejorative "waniguchi" (crocodile mouth) used to describe such women.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Sweet lord. It's no wonder why this nation's entertainment industry has little success world-wide. And what an original group name!!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

You can't see what their teeth are like in their very own website. Are they that embarrassing?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

is there something " special " about this number 48 in Japan ?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Yaeba have been 'cute' for many, many years in Japan, at least since Yamaguchi Momoe in the 1960s and 70s.

These girls have just been used as advertising for a new artifice by dentists.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Nothing to be proud of Japan.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

nandakandamanda: "Yaeba have been 'cute' for many, many years in Japan, at least since Yamaguchi Momoe in the 1960s and 70s."

Cute according to whom? My guess is you mean according to Japan.

And again, what's with the name? Are they going to search Japan, or just the local public school, for 45 more snaggle-tooths?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Oh brother....

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Yea what is normal in America isn't the same in Japan, have to not be surprised. I recall an American actress they said her buck teeth make her pretty cute, and she stated she doesn't want to get them fixed even if she has alot of money.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This is ridiculous...

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well, makes a change from the plastic perfection of western UK and US pop.

Not sure using 'snaggletooth' is a good move though. If they brought out a band made up of very short girls would they call them a shortarse girl group? Oh, wait, probably, lol

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yabba Dabba do!!! This is so stupid!!!!!!!!!!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

"snaggletooth"

This would be a great name for a rock band.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Japanese pop promoters are excellent - they'll come up with great new concepts. Pity the concept of quality never seems to turn up.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@Blackbagger

>Anyone who thinks the standards of beauty around the world are all essentially the same needs to open their eyes. I think it's not so much the standard of beauty not being the same, it's more about the standards of health being the same in general around the world. Crooked teeth simply aren't an ideal for your health.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Truly, different nations has different standards for beauty. Crooked teeth may be considered as ugliness around the world, just as too much masculine man body is rare and weird in Japan.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Braces. Use them.

Just one fine example of how so many of you just don't get it. Braces cannot fix these yaeba. Yaeba are not crooked teeth, at least not in the sense its being used here. Yaeba is like a fang placed directly outside the perimeter of the rest of the teeth. Its not a snaggletooth either. Its like a fang, something lots of westerners have dentists create for them too, only the style is different.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

@Jessebaybay.. Yes i know this isn't America... i was making a simple comparison.. thanks anyway

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Beauty is in the tooth of the beholder?

LOL, or maybe the eye tooth of the beholder? ;-)

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

???????? Hasn't it always been like that in Japan? I remember I have seen those pop "idol" have those snaggletooth when I was a kid. Well, I guess, it saves money on braces. Gosh! It is so expensive for my son's braces.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Less than perfectly aligned teeth can be very cute.

They can add 'character' to a face.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I can't wait for those who claim that this isn't a gimmick to make money I thought doctors and dentists were allowed to do no harm. How is messing up a perfectly good smile considered improvement?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Apart from the teeth, I object to the way the girl on the right is not properly grasping the girl in the middle...

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Only in Japan

0 ( +1 / -1 )

So... what do they think of nicely aligned teeth on girls then? Not . . . cute?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Finally, someone has stepped forward to fill the market for a snaggletooth girl pop group. The music world has been practically begging for such a group for years!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

How is messing up a perfectly good smile considered improvement?

When the owner decides it is so, and no one else.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm Nikkei and sort of had this, corrected with braces. You would need to use braces to align the teeth so those teeth don't protrude as much, simple as that.

The fake yaeba from the clinic don't appear to mess up your alignment, they just look like caps.

Truly, different nations has different standards for beauty.

I think all nation and all humans have the same standard for beauty deep inside. This doesn't only apply for women but for men, art, animals etc. There were many experiments, they traveled around the world with photos and pictures of beautiful things in the collection and the surveyed people all had chosen the same photos regardless of their geographical locations, culture and ethnic belonging.

This here is not about beauty it is about business and the aggressive control of public taste.

As of beauty. Women, or at least the greatest majority of the women are not beautiful. They are sexy, lovely, pretty, attractive, charming, irresistible, inviting, appealing, delightful, enchanting heart breaking, fascinating, glamorous, but it is still not beauty.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

TYB may stand for Tsuke YaeBa, but looking at those close-up shots in the above links, they seem to have been watching too much Twilight.

Maybe they should have been called DF48 or VF48.

Dracula Fangs, Vampire Fangs.

I guess you could think of it as just another cosmetic option, like double-eyelid surgery, colored contacts, or brain-wave controlled bunny ears.

Another normal day in Japan?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think they look cute. I have no problems with this. I'm not really into getting wound up about an article regarding a pop group I saw on the internet. Not at all.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I think if they were going to make a girl group based on a new fad they should make them wear Nekomimi too :P #missedopportunity

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Crooked teeth is a question of fashion now?

One notices the crooked teeth if a person with them smiles broadly. A person who smiles broadly despite of crooked teeth has strong self-confidence and a true reason for smiling. Those girls are cute despite crooked teeth, not because of them. Ignoring health effects of crooked teeth (difficulty in eating, etc) won't make them go away.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I'm Nikkei and sort of had this, corrected with braces.

Sort of? Thanks for playing.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I wonder who they're exactly marketing the group towards. I saw a thing on tv where they were polling different age groups about which AKB member they thought was the cutest, most sexy, and so on, and the older people invariably chose Tomomi Itano as their pick for cutest and she's the one with the obvious yaeba, and IMO is the reason they thought of making this yaeba group.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

From my experience a snaggletooth (one tooth protruding out further then the other teeth) is usually a symptom of adolescents. Because the adult canine teeth haven't come into their proper place. Of course some people will get stuck with this look to their teeth. So in my opinion this is an attempt to make girls look "cute" by making them look under age.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Regardless of what anyone says, encouraging young girls or women to having dental procedures performed to make them look cute is probably not the message that we should be sending our youth.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I love you for who you are and never change Japanese friends ciao :D
