X Japan’s Yoshiki apologizes for having dinner with Jackie Chan

Although the visual kei style of Japanese rock group X Japan is often dark and violent, fans know all too well how sweet and endearing its members really are. From the occasionally befuddled charm of drummer Yoshiki to the Christmas pancakes of singer Toshi, these guys don’t seem to have a bad bone in their body.

And on June 12, Yoshiki’s social media accounts revealed what he thought would be an exciting image for his fans depicting a private dinner between himself and legendary martial arts actor Jackie Chan.

Considering your perspective on current events, you could interpret this photo two ways. On the one hand, it’s two giants of their respective arts having a chat over a nice dinner. On the other hand, it’s Yoshiki smiling and laughing with a prominent and outspoken supporter of the Communist Party of China, especially regarding issues with Taiwan and Hong Kong.

And considering the bitter and violent protests currently taking place in Hong Kong over a controversial law that would allow the mainland to extradite people from the territory, it’s understandably not the best time to be yucking it up with Jackie Chan. So, Yoshiki did take a little heat from his photo in the replies on his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

“Shame….”

“Jackie Chan is a supporter of dictatorship, you rather have dinner with him and ignored the president of the first democratic republic country in Asia?”

“We hate jackie! just a running dog of communist china!”

“I live in Hong Kong I like [Chan], he is no saint but he has his merit.”

“I am sorry, X and you is very important to me and i love you very much. but your photo with this guy made me cry and tear.”

For the most part it was Chan who took most of the verbal abuse with Yoshiki only receiving the occasional “shame on you” and questions of “why?” Still, being the sensitive guy he is, Yoshiki couldn’t sit quiet after causing fans even mild discomfort.

He wrote on Twitter: "My dear fans, if any of my posts made you feel like... I'm not considering any situation, I deeply apologize. I really care about all of my fans and friends.

Love you,

YOSHIKI"

And of course, being the sensitive bunch they are, X Japan fans were quick to support him.

“I don’t know what kind of tweets you’ve got or seen, but we’ll always love you and you don’t have to worry about that.”

“[Yoshiki] doesn’t do business with JC, neither he is involved with politics. It’s just a personal meeting for dinner, nothing more.”

“Please don’t apologize for us. We know exactly how you feel. Thank you for your concern about us.”

“What happened?”

“I like Jacky chen and Yoshiki!!”

“I think it’s his freedom to eat with any one. You should not argue about our own political issues with him.”

“You guys should keep your politics and personal hatred out of Yoshiki sama’s page. Have some respect.”

“It’s definitely bad timing, but no big deal really.”

All’s well that ends well for the rock star who is by all accounts just a swell guy. Jackie Chan, however, seems to be hemorrhaging goodwill left and right these days.

Didn't know Japanese people were so narrow-minded and mean-spirited to criticize someone for having dinner with a friend.

In the Age of Outrage, fraternization with those associated with any opposition is not allowed. All relationships must be politically based, and friendships must be selected accordingly.

moronic messaging both ways between Yoshiki and his fanboys.

Welcome to the outrage generation!! The overlords are long overdue.

Jackie Chan left Hong Kong because Communist China doesn't like his movies. Besides, it's 2 guys having a friendly dinner. Is this any different than when Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev had their 'glasnost' discussions and dialog together?

JC's son got only 6 months in jail for a drug offense that should have kept in in jail for a lot longer or even maybe a death sentence....

Might have something to do with why he's so cosy with the commies.

I don't care either way, I love his movies -

Pathetic on many levels, Its two grown men having dinner. Grow up!

why People think it difficult? It’s just a picture of Jackie and Yoshiki eating dinner

Its is rather politically naïve tweeting a restaurant soiree with a Chan whose acknowledged membership Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and not expect, spastically accepting the current political climate and demonstrations in Hong Kong some negative criticism.

"My dear fans, if any of my posts made you feel like... I'm not considering any situation, I deeply apologize. I really care about all of my fans and friends”. ….....Fans in Hong Kong could be forgiven for finding this non apology a tad condescending, enjoy your desert.

Sorry about spelling especially instead of spastically. On the move not paying attention

So media makes a big hoopla over some haters on the internet? Why not talk about the positive messages from people thinking it is cool for them to dine together?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Did they really talk politics while schmoozing? Isn't Yoshiki Japanese?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Faux outrage or not, even the relevance of Chan/Yoshiki dinner table conversation.

Chan is on record, signing among 37 other political advisers calling on demonstrators and activists denouncing Chinese “history, heroes and martyrs” be tried as criminals, in effect enemies of the state.

Yoshiki is free and entitled to choose any person/politician he wishes to break bread with, tweeting the occasion on social media in the presence of hypocrite Chan is sure to provoke a negative response.

Meh.  Who cares about his politics.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

People should mind their own business. He's a not a politician or civil servant, he can have dinner with whoever he likes.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

I don't agree with all my friends' ideologies. Should I tell them to shove it and forever abandon them?

Whatever happened to open-mindedness! Oh, wait, you don't need that in a society that is trained to all think and act the same!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Guess he will just have to have his next dinner with him without social media.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They look happy enough together in that photo.

So maybe it does not fit everyone's narrative, but not everyone is strictly living a politically-correct life.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Can't even have dinner together WTF?? people are seriously nuts

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Do people realize you can actually have dinner and chat with people with different ideologies than you? geeeeez a dinner does not mean you are both conspiring the rebirth of Mao-ism

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Didn't know Japanese people were so narrow-minded and mean-spirited to criticize someone for...

Welcome to the real...

It is extremely regrettable that Yoshiki-San would have dinner with a Communist sympathiser. At least he apologized, and promised it wont happen again.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Im pretty sure Jacki Chan wouldn't be able to step foot in China if he was out spoken against the Chinese government. Anyway he's just and actor, their opinions should be held with a grain of salt.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Jackie Chan lost a lot of my respect when he revealed his own bigotry and support for dictatorships.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

I'd have dinner with Jackie Chan any day -- I'd just avoid the topic of politics, as I'm sure these guys did. He shouldn't have to apologize one bit.

Hong Kong is a political tinder box ready to ignite, Whatever fans feel about the significance or indifference as to whether Yoshiki should apologise or not is is irrelevant.

Interpretation counts, and skilled use of social media to propagate political opinion is both the Hong Kong and Chinese Government most powerful global propaganda tool.

The only prevention the people can rely upon stopping the Government of China seizing control is Hong Kong Judicial system. A system that is slowly and surely in the process of being dismantled..

Yoshiki is without doubt an influencer, global figure of genuine good character, command respect and admiration. It is nether the time or the place to post on Instagram media that can be inadvertently used to promote or assist the policies of political hate-figure Chan.

Chan is reviled and despised in Taiwan and Hong Kong, Politically toxic and poisonous. Chan also feigns ignorance to the ongoing democracy demonstratives in Hong Kong.

Chan.... “There should be rules to determine what people can protest about and on what issues they can’t protest about. I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not. I'm really confused now. If you're too free, you're like the way Hong Kong is now. It's very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic,"......2014/5.......Chan views have reported hardened since.

It's not Japanese people, it's definitely Chinese people from HK with those comments.

There are more Chinese fans of X Japan than Japanese. Their music is still played in tiny shops of plazas in HK.

Also, Japanese love Jackie Chan.

Whereas Chinese love X Japan.

Didn't know Japanese people were so narrow-minded and mean-spirited to criticize someone for having dinner with a friend.

There are roughly 126 million Japanese. It is hardly surprising that in a population that large there are some narrowed minded people. Your phrasing makes it sound like all Japanese people are narrow-minded and mean-spirited.

Generalizing from the comments of a few Japanese on social media would be equivalent to Japanese generalizing about all foreigners on the basis of comments here.

Benjamin Franklin and a Lord in British Parliament were good friends all their lives - before, during and after the American Revolution. Of course King George III was a pompous ass but that didn't get in the way of those men's friendship. And so it goes for this case too.

I don't care either way, I love his movies -

Ever seen 'The Foreigner'? It shows those critics who dismiss Chan as just a 'kung fu' star for marquee appeal wrong. It's a 'serious' film that shows that he can really act and act good. Nonetheless I love his other movies too because he is so amazing! After HK reverted to Chinese control Hollywood had Chan star in some turgid films because they restricted him. Nonetheless, check out 'The Foreigner'. It's good.

Its is rather politically naïve tweeting a restaurant soiree...

The "woke" ideology simplified. Everything, no matter how trivial, has to be discussed with an eye on how it will be viewed "politically". Failure to do so will force one to be banished to the nearest corner where you will be forced to contemplate your thought crime.

Although Jackie made a lot of good movies, his extramarital affair, his upbringing of his son and his support for dictatorship turns me off.
