X Japan makes U.S. debut at Lollapalooza

Rock band X Japan made their U.S. debut at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago last Sunday, attracting a crowd of around 20,000 in the summer heat.

The band serenaded the audience with classics such as "Kurenai" and "X" before leader Yoshiki tore up the drums and rampaged around stage at the end of the set.

The band announced that its U.S. tour will start on Sept 25, with Yoshiki saying that "The rocket's been ignited."

I'm happy for X Japan; I hope their tour goes well ... It would be fun to see Seikima II do the same!

Well said, mokgohan. I expect their US tour will be playing local clubs and an occasional House Of Blues if lucky. I saw the B`z in 2004 at a bar in Seattle, maybe 500 people at tops. I doubt X Japan will top that"

oh I like B'z!

Lets just wait for Gackt to hit American theaters in Bunraku. Nationwide I wonder how many screaming fans will line up just to see Gackt on the big screen! ahahahah. Probably more than at all these other music venues combined. Lol. fun times.

Soundgarden, Lady GaGa, Green Day, Jimmy Cliff, Devo...plus 30 other touring bands in the lineup. Seems like the only nobodies were X Japan. I imagine most the crowd expected John Doe and Exene to show up instead.

It just seems strange the X Japan would do a concert with a bunch of nobodies.

"Arcade who?" "Soundgarden who?" "etc... who?"

Sigh- much like the band themselves, it seems X-Japan's fans don't realize that there is music beyond cheesy 90's hair-metal.

Yeah- Arcade Fire; all they did was headline the event. I could fire off their credentials now but if you've gotta ask then maybe you folks should just stay happy under your rocks.

Most overheard question at Lollapalooza this year: "Who-japan?"

X Japan without Hide is like a drummer who always smashes his drums after his solo. Once is interesting. A thousand times is boring.

Touche.

This article makes it sound like X Japan attracted 20,000 people. But if you take away the Soundgarden, Arcade Fire, etc.. fans the number that showed up exclusively for X is probably closer to 2.

Would have been pretty amazing to see at some of the big Tokyo Dome concerts before they started making dumb ballads. I read somewhere that Hide's famous "tobe tobe tobe", was actually originally "stop it, stop it, stop it". And that fans heard it and just thought it was "tobe tobe tobe", so that's what they started using. If you watch early X videos it does sound like it and makes sense where he uses it.

It is a good start for Japan's Rock metal waves shaking American hearts and minds beyond cars, anime, manga, and electronics. Summer's heat may pass fans out under the sun. Chicago is a good place for a new tour. Good luck to X Japan.
