Yuki Amami still single but happy with Toshiba’s mother-oriented appliances

Actress Yuki Amami, 42, was all smiles at an event in Ebisu this week to promote manufacturer Toshiba’s latest appliance range aimed at housewives and the mother market. Amami stars in the commercial currently on air for the company’s new refrigerator and washing machine, featuring the slogan “Mama gokoro kaden.” A Toshiba executive said at the event: “If mothers are happy with the new functions, then everyone will be happy.”

Amami, while single herself, became a symbol for middle-aged women after her performance in TBS drama “Around 40” last year, and this is her third year of working with Toshiba.

She said: “I look forward to the new features every time. The appliances are of course a big help for mothers, but they also help single ladies like me. I depend on the machines daily and it’s no exaggeration to say that Toshiba is supporting my life.”

Honestly, Japan needs to stop marketing to housewives and market to families. It is embarrassing that they still have throw back 1960's mentality towards housework and women. "If mom is happy everyone will be..." Please.

Not strictly true of course, but if mother isn't happy then everyone knows about it.

You're both right, as more and more Japanese women return to work after having kids it's not logical to keep up the housewife myth. But lets face it, in most countries it's still the mother who gets to do all the housework, even if she's out working as many hours as her husband. Most men for example are only interested in 'permitting' the purchase of a dish-washing machine if they're expected to help with the dish-washing process. Amazing. And I'm not talking about J-men, I'm talking about men.

I`m really interested in the definition of a "mother-oriented device" as opposed to any other device -

Do they have a different kind of fridge and washing machine for married women and mothers as opposed to single men/women??!

Does the machine come with a built-in voice control that yells at you "I want.../wheres my../Im bored! every time you open the door??!

Single women usually live with their families so they don't need to buy such things. Married women are the ones that do (with hubbies money of course), hence them being marketed only to them and not single women. Either way it is disgusting.

tmarie: Right, because we went through that phase in the 60s every other nation in the world must follow our timeline. By that logic, how about we start finally building bullet trains, vending machines, and offering half decent service. We're 50 years behind Japan here.

kirakira: I can't speak for mother oriented, but there's definitely a bachelor-oriented market. It's hard finding cookware or buying supplies for a single person. You're either screwed in pricing ($2 for pint of milk and $3 for a quart) or are forced to buy more than you can consume.

We got a spiffy new washing machine, that dries the clothes too. It is a pain in the petootie. Before we could just dump all our stuff in and push the button. Now we have to carefully separate the clothes based on what they are made of. Heck of a lot more work for mother and me. Put the clothes in, and the machine tells you how much it weighs, how much detergent to put in, and that it will take 3 hours to finish. I guess that includes the drying, but three hours?!?!? Doesn't seem to matter how small the loads are. Wish we hadn't sunk all that yen into this thing. Simple is best.

I will say the one advantage of a dryer is how hard it is to hang dry in the humid summer, not to mention the smell as clothes sit moist for too long.

How does she know? Info from toshiba engineers? They are exaggerating of course to make people buy their goods. I'd say appliances these days have too many features. I wonder if the housewives are using them effectively.
