Why not just print it and put it in the "fiction" section?

How does it matter if the writer is not able to answer concerns about “The Last Train from Hiroshima,” including whether two men mentioned in the book actually existed or not ?

Because he already sold it as non-fiction.

bokudayo: good thought or call it a historical novel. I'd like to read it or better yet see it on screen with the full Cameron treatment. I'd say if you have one of the 7000 sold copies it's now valuable.

p2r31, because it was presented as non-fiction and a history book. If you can't even say these people existed, what does it say about the rest of your 'facts'? If you read a history book that called Osaka the capital of Japan, wouldn't you suspect the rest of the book as being similarly inaccurate? Of course, if he had presented it as fiction. No problem. But then it wouldn't sell because it might be incredibly boring as fiction.
