Color Power 5K event coming to Japan

In recent years, running events incorporating the colored powder of Hindu Holi festivals have garnered enormous popularity and millions of enthusiastic attendees in the United States, Europe, and large swaths of Asia, but they have yet to reach Japan’s shores. On Saturday, March 1, the global phenomenon will finally arrive in Japan. Oiso Long Beach, on the scenic Kanagawa coast, will play host to Japan’s first such event: Color Power 5K (CP5K).

In the untimed, recreational CP5K event, participants begin the course wearing white shirts, but things soon get very colorful. Volunteers in “color zones” along the route shower entrants with different shades of brightly colored, non-toxic powder made from food-grade cornstarch. By the time each person finishes the course, they are a unique, walking work of art.

At the finish line, there are synchronized color throws, music, food, and myriad opportunities to meet new friends. With numerous participants not only from Japan, but also a host of other countries, many entrants look forward to interacting with people of other languages and cultures. The finish-line party has also been described by past participants as a euphoric way to relieve stress while enjoying exercise alongside friends new and old.

Director Derek Wessman explained, “Color Power 5K is a great time for everyone, whether they’re two or 102 years of age. No one worries about speed—the focus is on enjoying a memorable, wild, carefree day with friends or family, and making new friends. It’s the perfect chance to run, shout, get dusted in color, and have a healthy escape from the daily grind.”

He also commented, “We have no doubt that this event will become extremely popular in Japan. So many people here are excited about fitness and events that bring people together. Our concept also has huge potential for positive economic impact on host towns and cities.”

Online registration runs until February 12, but participants can also register on the day of the event. Free buses will transport participants from Oiso Station on the JR Tokaido Line to the venue, Oiso Long Beach. Showers will be available following the event.

Participants can register at here. Further information is also available at the official web site and the event’s Facebook page.

Very interesting! and would have loved to joined. But all the cheaper entries are already sold out, so this article should have been published much earlier.

Anyway, hoping the Yokohama edition materializes soon.
