America is very uptight when it comes to sex. Perhaps that is linked to the high rates of teen pregnancy. Parents and society refuse to discuss sex.

In the US everything is a social taboo and politically incorrect. Who know we may even see a blurred mask on TV every time elected president Trump is on the screen.LoL

Really? Mention a few countries that are not? France, yes, just maybe, and . . .?

Try Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Israel, etc. basically European and Latin nations are much more lax.

The double morale in the media is the problem, if Verhoeven tries to do a remake of Showgirls right now he will find in front of him a lot of activists denouncing him as using the women as object, yes the PG-13 is the biggest market, but because it attracts children and adults together, a R-rated film has limitations but is profitable using the correct publicity, just use Deadpool as example...

That's funny, coming from the center of the porn industry

Surely the uptightness - where sex is seen as something wrong - created the porn industry in the first place.

We can also blame the PG13 obsession on bean counters eyeing the biggest global markets, resulting in bland pap.

Teens need healthy, contextual, nuanced, hot eroticism, not the manipulative, male-centric wankfodder that kids are bombarded with. Keep art to the artists, not the accountants.

@Triring, I'd throw Canada and Iceland onto your list. Yes, the US has a problem with sex, but it's more a result of that country's original settlers and its obsession with Christian and evangelist religion, not so much because of teen pregnancy.

America definitely does have some weird hangups about sex. Show a nipple on TV and it causes nipple-gate (anyone remember the wardrobe malfunction?). Show someone getting brutally murdered - all good.

Which one is worse for society I wonder...

sensei: That's funny, coming from the center of the porn industry

San Fernando Valley off to the northwest is the center, not Hollywood (and, not counting Japan or Europe).

Verhoeven's complaining about the same thing artsy and minority entertainment people complain about, movie houses chasing ratings. But they're not going to make up the difference for pictures that bomb. Businesses are in business to maximize profits.
