Nobody’s going to miss Hong Kong now that it’s been transformed like it has.

Ahmedabad is not a coastal city. It is nowhere near the coast.

It’s strange that NTU has made this basic mistake. Either that or the article cherry picks some parts of the study to give a sensational headline.

The authors are not wrong. Ahmedabad is not unlike New Orleans. Both are major seaports (with a deep water container terminal and 6 million shipments a year the city definitely qualifies as a major seaport), both are situated along major rivers in coastal their deltas and both are technically away from the coast but close enough to the sea to be subject to coastal influences. And importantly both are sinking for much the same reasons. Before there were cities on these sites mud from annual floods would replenish the deltas the cities were built on. But today floods are not allowed in the built up areas. As organic matter in the soil decays the ground subsides and no new mud arrives to build the land back up again. Dikes in New Orleans keep the Mississippi River out, but they have had the effect of channeling the mud from floods between the dikes It is to the point now where street level in some parts of New Orleans is lower than the river bed on the opposite side of the dikes. The river bed is actually rising, forcing the dikes to be raised. If nature had been left to its course the Mississippi would have changed course fifty years ago taking the shorter and steeper path to the sea following a branch of the delta called the Atchafalaya River and would empty into the Gulf at Morgan City, leaving New Orleans high and dry, but the Army Corps of Engineers built this huge series of dikes and spillways called "Old River Control" to prevent this.

There are no seaports in Ahmedabad or any deep water container terminal, it is linked to Kandla and Mudra seaports via container train, road trailers, and these seaports are at a distance of 200-300 kms from Ahmedabad.
