The greenhouse effect is non-linear, because it is amplified by two positive feedback mechanisms at least. The first is the rapid melting of the ice caps, which amplifies the greenhouse effect by curtailing the heat radiation from the Earth back to the outer space. The second is the increased absorption of water vapor in the atmosphere as the temperature rises. The vapors act as a blanket which amplifies the heating process. (Sometimes, due to temperature fluctuations, some vapor re-condenses and fall as torrential rain.) Because of this non-linearity, the atmospheric stability is bound to break down very soon: Sooner rather than later the temperature will jump to a hundred or two hundreds degrees Celsius. The oceans will vaporize, and a thick blanket of ultra-hot steam will embrace the entire planet. This steam blanket will perpetuate the greenhouse effect and make the greenhouse eternal. The rains will cease. No life will develop again on this planet.
