Lets add this up...

600 million trees decapitated

200,000 hectares of production land

22 billion tons of water ration

84 million tons of CO2 emissions

7,000 toxic chemical littering

4.5 trillion butts discarded

with the equivalent of one-fifth of the global airline industry's carbon footprint.

...do we get the picture?

Farmers who handle tobacco leaves all day consume the equivalent of 50 cigarettes worth of nicotine a day, Krech said.

"Just imagine a 12-year-old being exposed to 50 cigarettes a day," he said.

That's a little misleading, I think. Nicotine is not responsible for the harmful effects of smoking. (Although it does cause addiction.) Green tobacco sickness is a different condition.
