I always make sure I keep on the AC in the night when it’s hot, quality sleep is essential you see. Regardless of the arguments as to why the heat has risen it’s always best to make sure you don’t overheat. Make sure to stay hydrated, dyhydration can cause many issues like Cramp, headaches and more, especially for the elderly.
Now it’s much hotter lately in Japan maybe the government should consider a one of payment every summer for those with low incomes so they don’t have to worry about putting on the AC or fans, maybe 20,000 Yen for instance.
Also how about those elderly and low incomes to have assistance in buying an AC, some people still don’t even have you see.
I’d willingly pay a but extra to help those people out, we have to look after each other, the means is there but is the will?

"Sleeping with the AC on can also cause some physical issues, including dehydration. Having the AC on all night can dry out your nose, mouth, throat, and skin, since the unit not only cools down the air but also dehumidifies it."
We cool the bedroom for 30 minutes with the AC. Ice pillow and fan next to the bed.
Norm
That sounds sensible. I do the same, but I use the dehumidifier instead of the A/C. The lower humidity makes everything more comfortable.

You live in the sticks relative to me. We tried without AC one time with just fan and the temp didn’t fall below 33C. There’s no respite from the heat in the summer when you’re bang in the center of town.
The humidity hasn’t fallen below 40% in the bedroom for at least 3 months. In my workroom/office now and humidity is 46%.
Yousef Ghanimeh
In the 20th century we used to call it summer
wallace
It's not good for your body to sleep with the AC on all night.
Humidity at 46% is very low. Usually 70-90% for summer months.
Cool the room for I hour at a temperature of -5ºC than the outside temperature. Ice pillows work very well and are used in hospitals.
In our main room, in the daytime, I have only used the dehumidifier setting and not the cooling.

Better for me old top. I’m not trying to sleep in 33C temps, that’s for sure. I get it down to 27C and sleep like a baby, make no mistake.
wallace
There are many medical reports on sleeping with AC. You can cool the room for 1 hour.

Maybe, but it hasn’t done my any harm thus far bruv.
Main thing is, elderly shouldn’t be scared of paying energy bills, that’s what they said initially here when they started nuclear power, it will cost pennies compared to before. Pennies, you say. In many parts of Japan the prices have gone up a lot lately, my bills seem the same as before even with my son here so I’m not bothered.
wallace
If you don't pay your power bill the next month you will be disconnected.
sakurasuki
That explain many ambulance turn on their sirene, during summer night not only during the day.
Still many old people refuse to use their air conditioning in Japan.
zibala
Not true in Japan.
wallace
Billions of poor people don't have any form of AC and live in poor housing which gives no protection against the night heat. Many are also dealing with crop failures and droughts.

Them people aren’t in Japan though and most of those countries have the peoples money squandered by their governments.

The article is not specifically about Japan.

Just your daily reminder that if you care about climate change, you should also care about Nuclear Power, as it is the only form of base load (that runs 24h with the possibility of adjusting load) that has the potential of replacing fossil fuel's base load around with no geographical requirement.
We would be in a very different place if research and investment on nuclear power had continued as it did back in the 60's.
We cannot pretend that climate change is so important, yet we don't look at replacing it in realistic terms.

Increased URBANIZATION has a far more extensive impact on the Heat Island Effect which is was what makes urban and now suburban areas warmer even at night. The increased latent heat that accumulates in the concrete & asphalt jungle takes longer to dissipate at night and simply cannot dissipate to previous historic levels.
But blame bovine flatulence and car exhaust....
virusrex
That is completely incorrect, measurements of temperature already take into account the heat island effect and it still indicate an important elevation of the temperature, unless you think all the surface of the planet (including the seas) is covered in cities this excuse makes absolutely no sense.
Human activity is responsible for climate change, being in denial of this well supported scientific fact does not make it false, it only makes the deniers seem gullible.

Fortunately for me right now it is only 21 degrees where I live! I don't even own an aircon! And I can't even sleep with a fan on as it gets too cold at night!!
Yururi
I think elderly people may not feel hot even though most people do because their sense organs might not function as well, so we should install an air conditioner in our grandparents' house with an automatic on/off function.
Norm
Man, that sounds great. I just came back from my evening walk here in Osaka, and it’s 29°. Tomorrow afternoon will be a comfortable, balmy 37°.
I’m curious to know where you are.
Chuck
That’s a kind and overall excellent idea. In talking with my elderly neighbors (and there are a lot of them), I find that many are quite comfortable at night with no A/C at all. And all night long here in central Osaka the ambulances come and go.
Charles Marlowe
Today’s climate change propaganda, this time from a ‘global analysis’ by our old friends the WHO, an absolutely reliable and unbiased source with all our best interests at heart.
Is there a quote of these fake news articles that has to be met? It feels like it. Have to keep people scared, especially now as a few dissenting voices are starting to be heard (check out the World Climate Declaration - 2000 distinguished scientists and researchers who DO NOT believe in the ‘climate emergency’). Or don’t, just down vote me and perhaps post something abusive in response. Up to you.
I periodically post here in resistance to this brainwashing. Some times the posts are blocked, sometimes they get through and are quickly deleted. Anyway, it feels better than doing nothing, and despite the abuse it provokes, I may reach someone who hasn’t been totally indoctrinated.
Gene Hennigh
Phew! Am I glad! Thank you Mr. Charles Marlowe. Mother nature doing her thing.
Oh, but one question. When is mother nature going to stop? Any idea? Are we doomed to cook like roast beefs?
I guess there is nothing we can do. Mother nature has selected us for extinction. We should just roll over and let it happen.
餓死鬼
Would that be this “World Climate Declaration”?

@Norm I live in Yamanashi at an altitude of 1100m! But it gets very cold in the Winter!
NB
The denial of the climate crisis is stupid and suicidal.
NB
When our planet fails to emit the heat to the outer space, and cannot get rid of the heat even at night, this is not good.
Norm
Hi, Mountainpear,
Ah! I should have guessed by your name!
Well, at the moment I’m envious of your situation. But if you were to ask me in the dead of winter, I might have a different feeling.
