Nope. The oil industry and USG knew about climate change decades ago and suppressed it. But they didn't need to. Even if it had been widely known about, do you really think any governments would have scaled back their economies, whilst others developed new tech, weapons and consumer goods and saw their economies improve? Climate change could have been widely known about since the nineteenth century, and things would still have unfurled in exactly the same way as they have, only doing the minimum when the effects were finally being felt. It's not stopping Putin invading Ukraine, and war is hardly climate friendly and China have ended climate change cooperation with the US because they are a bit peeved. For some countries, the return to coal use is a price worth paying for sanctions that aren't even working.

The 1-2 degree rise has been the worst bit of science popularisation in recorded history. Nobody will do anything if told that. The real damage is caused by periods of extreme weather that cause catastrophic damage to crops and loss of life. Scientists are great at science but rubbish at explaining it to non-scientists.

As for the endgame. You don't need to be a well-funded scientist to work out what is going to happen. The conclusion of humanity will be 'nasty, brutish and short'. Most civilisations do seem to have collapsed quite quickly. Ours will be no different.

Writing in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, they proposed an international research agenda to help governments plan for "bad-to-worst cases".

The evidence is pretty conclusive at this point...as pointed out above it is questionable whether we can avoid catastrophe, because that would entail overcoming greed and the urge to benefit at the expense of others.

People don't want to believe bad things.

Some political parties capitalize off this, as their only policy is to cut regulations that would fight against climate change, because such regulations make their donor's/owner's businesses less profitable. So to get the support of the people who don't exercise their intelligence (conservatives), they say "climate change is a hoax." Now politics is like sports teams. You have to be 100% for your team. So you have to tow the party line, even if its a chain of lies leading off a cliff.

If there is conclusive evidence then world leaders would have acted with much more urgency and mobilized much more resources than what they did and are doing for covid.
