These are great news. It is exactly what humankind need. We are in a race between the looming climate calamity on the one hand, and the resourceful efforts to curb this calamity on the other hand. If we win and survive, we will enter a new era of modernization and technological advancement. The sun hits our planet with an unlimited flux of energy, and it is so easy and inexpensive to exploit this energy and even store it using electromagnetic or gravitational fields.

Japan needs to increase its use of renewable energy to 30-50% of the total power.
From 2018 to 2022, the share of renewable generation in Japan grew from 21% to 26%.

The use of coal needs to end.

Great! It's cheap, clean, and reduces reliance on gas/oil states.

Solar panels plus battery storage = problem solved.
Zaphod
There is nothing "renewable" about solar panels, which after their service life of about 20 years become toxic industrial waste. The mixture of heavy metals and plastic is an environmental nightmare. And what about the agricultural land they are placed on?
virusrex
There is nothing rational about expecting solar panels to self replenish at a higher rate than what they are used (which is what renewable means in this context) they are of course heavily susceptible to reuse and recycle, after all a lot of the panels is just glass, copper, aluminum, etc.
I mean, this is not something that suddenly become important
https://www.epa.gov/hw/end-life-solar-panels-regulations-and-management
A problem solved with ease by not putting the panels in agricultural land, there is no requirement for solar energy to be harvested only when the panels are over land that could be used for agriculture.
wallace
Solar panels are installed on land not being used for any other purpose. I see them mostly on wasteland or domestic land.
"So, can solar panels be recycled? The short answer is yes. Silicon solar modules primarily comprise glass, plastic, and aluminum, three materials that are recycled in mass quantities."

There is nothing rational about diverting from the original issue that solar panels themselves have adverse effects on the environment compared with the energy they supply.
As out-of-use solar panels sit around, the toxic metals they contain can leak out into the environment and present a public health hazard if they get into the groundwater supply.
virusrex
Since the effects were demonstrated easily avoided this is a debunked argument, there is no diverting, just debunking.
Heavy metals are not produced exclusively by solar panels and as the references provided clearly proves there is no difficulty to avoid this danger as it has been done for any of their multiple other applications for decades.
