Let’s face it, unless the rest of the world, and particularly large emitters such as India, China and Russia start getting serious about it, there’s not much a small country like Australia can do about the changing climate and its effect on the Great Barrier Reef. What Australian governments can do is to get serious about the pollution from mining and agriculture on the mainland, and the toxic run off into waterways which is washing out to sea to pollute the Reef and further, hundreds of kilometres. Reducing that would substantially assist in the Reef’s survival, but tackling it, and the entrenched political and business interests who control it, seems to be beyond the capacity, or the will, of governments.
