Tourism will be the preserve of the wealthy from now on. If your hotel does not have five stars, sell it whilst you can. And not just in Thailand.

I went there 10 years ago, it was full of Australian tourists. Was still an amazing place to go but the constant ferry boats going in and out ruined the experience a bit.

it wants to move on from Thailand's history of hedonistic mass tourism

Yes, end the mass tourism but not the hedonist part. Few places in the world are as wonderfully hedonistic as Thailand. May that last forever.

Now difficult to find isolated locations on the hippie trail.

I recommend certain spots in the Philippines if you want to go somewhere that feels isolated and undiscovered. Indonesia (but not Bali) has spots but the local people can be uptight and nasty.

Wasn’t that movie part of the reason DiCaprio became an environmental activist? Anyway, Plenty of other nice beaches in Thailand! Or any other country that doesn’t imprison you for mocking the king on Facebook!

We'll see what wins out, the almighty tourist dollar or the environment. I hope it's the latter but I wouldn't bet on that. Good luck.
