The hole in the ozone was originally probably caused be rockets ripping through it, and burning off massive amounts of fuel.

First, let's understand how Ozone is being produced. The short UV rays from the Sun interact with Oxygen in the air, producing Ozone, these UV rays are consumed in the process. So, while there is Oxygen in the air, there will be a protection from the short UV rays and Ozone will be produced as a consequence (Oxygen protects from UV, Ozone is just a byproduct and, it will either oxidize something cleaning the air, or will revert back to Oxygen after some time to repeat the cycle).
