A charity gala to raise money for the New Haven Children's Home in Jamaica will be held in Japan for the first time.
The New Haven Children's Home in Westhaven is an established charitable organization situated in western Jamaica. It was started in 1981 by a group of concerned citizens headed by Gloria Veira, who through her work with the family court and children's services, became aware of the extent of neglect, abuse and lack of love suffered by children who some form of mental or physical disability.
The first cottage was opened in 1991. Now, thanks to generous donations from various organizations, there are four fully operational cottages that house 100 children and adults (4 years – 37 years).
The home is under the jurisdiction, and is licensed under the Children’s Services Division of the Ministry of Health. The ongoing operational costs of the home are supported in part from maintenance fund from the ministry, the amount however, is woefully inadequate. Westhaven wound not be able to function without the support of service clubs, schools, churches and mission teams.
In September 2012, the school at Westhaven was opened thanks to the efforts of Children with Disabilities Fund International (CDFI). There are two special education teachers who work with the children from Monday to Friday each week.
Their largest need is a vehicle to take the children to the doctor. This year the gala will be trying to buy a 8-seat vehicle this will enable them to take children with wheelchairs easily. It will also be necessary to pay for shipping and handling.
Enjoy authentic Jamaican food and dance to Jamaican music. There will be cultural performances and blind auctions for one-of-a-kind items.
Tickets to the event are 12,000 yen (for bronze), 120,000 yen (silver) and 150,000 yen (gold).
