Fitzgerald's Hollywood ending followed sad death

I would recommend going onto youtube and watching the 1949 version starring Alan Ladd. Wonderful film, you can watch it at home and the best part, free of charge.

I am with Yardley on this, 'The Great Gatsby' was a great book, its difficult to imagine it getting captured in a movie. 'Every man suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues and this is mine, I am one of the few honest people I have ever known'. Difficult to get the same effect in a movie.

It's not fair to judge the movie before I see it, but I doubt Luhrmann got it right. It's one of those stories that just isn't made for film. It's the language of the novel that matters, that's where the heart of it is, but that language doesn't usually work in film. Judging by the still photos and trailer, Luhrmann's version looks silly and way over the top. Do yourself a favor and read the book if you haven't already. And, by the way, enjoy one of the best final sentences of any novel ever.

The Great Depression sunk FSF. He created the Jazz Age and it died when the stock market crashed in 1929. The party was over. The flappers and philosophers were unemployed and broke. FSF tried coping with the new reality in "Babylon Revisited." But FSF was not Charlie Wales, the ex-alcohol who took one drink a day to show it had no effect on him. FSF relapsed into alcohol addiction (see "An Alcoholic Case") and into trying to bring the dead 1920s back to life in Tender is the Night. There is no way FSF could write something like The Grapes of Wrath. Lots of famous writers were suddenly forgotten in the 1930s. If only poor FSF could have lived to see his revival.

Tobey McGuire is the worst actor ever and I refuse to see this movie because of him.. but I'm a fan of Leo movies. I'm torn!!
