Go with biscuit cinnamon rolls. Cheap, easy, no rising necessary, the powdered sugar is probably the most expensive part.

FizzBit: I'm with you on this one... assuming you can even FIND sour cream (many supermarkets don't carry it) you'd be lucky to find anything bigger than a tiny cup costing minimum ¥350. Even CostCo here doesn't have it (that I've seen).

Smithinjapan: that’s odd cuz I can find it in almost all the big chains where I’m at. They all switched to a new brand with a 3 month expiration date. How they managed that I dunno but the sour cream here is far far better IMO (more sourness and less creamy) than any I have tried in the US.

FizzBit: Like I said, some do, some don't. The one's that do have three or four 90 gram cups, next to 1 million types of yoghurt. They often have cottage cheese for some reason, but not sour cream. You can buy it a 1000 g container from retailers online for either ¥3000 flat out, or ¥2100 + 900 shipping. Take your pic. Either way, it's great, but costs an arm and a leg.

A good substitute for hard-to-find/ridiculously expensive sour cream is Greek yoghurt or plain yoghurt that has strained through muslin (or a yoghurt strainer) for an hour or so.
At last, a yummy-looking recipe I feel inspired to try. Despite the annoying use of cup measurements instead of grammes, or even ounces that can be easily converted.
