McDonald's Japan Corp has teamed up with one of Japan's most famous heroes, Ultraman, in conjunction with the highly anticipated reimagining of the series by Anno Hideaki in his upcoming film "Shin Ultraman," opening on May 13.
The new collaboration, a first for McDonald's, features a return of their long-selling favorite fried chicken burger, the Chicken Tatsuta, as well as a new version called Shin Tatsuta Miyazaki Specialty Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce.
The two chicken burgers will be available at McDonald's restaurants nationwide in Japan for a limited time starting April 20th, 2022. In addition, five new side dishes and drinks will be added to the lineup and the burgers and drinks will be offered in original Ultraman packaging.
Chicken Tatsuta
The Chicken Tatsuta features a soft and fluffy original bun sandwiching a juicy chicken patty flavored with ginger soy sauce, crispy shredded cabbage, and a creamy, slightly spicy sauce. It's a classic that has been loved for over 30 years since it was first introduced in 1991.
A la carte: 390 yen, Value Set: 690 yen, Morning Mac Set: 590 yen, Combo Morning Mac Set: 450 yen
Shin Tatsuta Miyazaki Specialty Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce
The シン・タツタ宮崎名物チキン南蛮タルタル shin tatsuta miyazaki meibutsu chikin nanban tarutaru (Shin Tatsuta Miyazaki Specialty Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce) blends a plump chicken patty flavored with ginger soy sauce with a rich and thick tartar sauce flavored with black rice vinegar sauce. The new taste is worthy of the name Shin, meaning "new."
A la carte: 420 yen, Value Set: 720 yen, Morning Mac Set: 620 yen, Combo Morning Mac Set: 480 yen
Joining the chicken burger duo are シャカシャカポテトレッド&ブラック ダブルペッパー Shaka Shaka Potato Red & Black Double Pepper (S: 180 yen, M: 310 yen, L: 360 yen), マックフィズ青森県産ふじりんご makkku fizu aomoriken-san fuji ringo (Mac Fizz Aomori Fuji Apple) for 250 yen, the マックフロート 青森県産ふじりんご makku furoto aomoriken-san fuji ringo (Mac Float Aomori Fuji Apple) for 310 yen, the マックフィズ 熊本県産すいか makku fizu kumamoto-ken suika (McFizz Kumamoto Watermelon) for 250 yen, and the マックフロート熊本県産すいか makku furoto kumamoto-ken suika (Mac Float Kumamoto Watermelon) for 310 yen in limited-edition cups featuring an illustration of Ultraman from the film. (*Some stores may not offer these products. A limited number of cups are available.)
Television Commercial
Moreover, a new commercial has been released online and will air on Japanese TV from April 19th. As a special Chicken Tatsuta® variation on the theme song from the 1971 TV series 帰ってきたウルトラマン kaette kita urutoraman (Return of Ultraman) plays in the background, we see Japanese people from different walks of life waiting for the Chicken Tatsuta's return...
But they are greeted by not one, but two burgers, which appear in front of them like heroes.
Fans of the Ultraman series may recognize the familiar "Ultraman-style" font used to write the names of the two burgers in the commercial.
As the two heroes appear, the people rejoice and the commercial ends with a clip from the upcoming film, "Shin Ultraman," along with the Golden Arches and the words "Ultra Tasty!"
The atmosphere is reminiscent of the Showa Era, when "Return of Ultraman" was first broadcast on Japanese TV.
Twitter campaigns in which you can win "Shin Ultraman" themed McCard cash cards are also being held. Details here (Japanese only).

I was coming home late the other day and hadn't had a chance to eat all day. It was a choice of a conbini or Mac. It's years since I'd eaten at a Mac, so I went in and ordered.
It was horrible. I don't know how people can eat this garbage out of choice. The meat tasted of meat in the same way that cherry cola tastes of cherries. The bun was soggy and the French fries were tasteless. No, that's not true. They were very salty.
Never again!

Literally every other fast food brand in Japan is better than McDonalds. Mos, Lotteria, Freshness, Burger King are all better. And not just a little better. Much better.
And, it's not just the fast food brands. Conbini too. Even MiniStop has better potatoes. I highly recommend both their wedge and crinkle cut types.
(Agree with Bertie about the overuse of salt on McD's fries. Holy crap, I thought they were salty back in the US. They're almost inedibly salty here.)

I don't know about that, I personally think Lotteria is worse than MD and that's being conservative, Freshness is ok, Mos and BK are better for sure.
I think that is just subjective, I can pass on the MD burgers, but they still have great fries as long as they are freshly made, if not then they are bad. The thought of any french fry or potato wedge cold and then warmed up is as gross as it gets.
That is true, but you can also ask MD to go easy or no salt, that's what I do and just never have to worry and you get a fresh batch of fresh fries as well.

Great review, but save it for Yelp.
