Easy fix to avoid skin forming on hot milk

By Mujo, grape Japan

The Winter Solstice is behind us and it’s time to brace for the cold. When you get home and peel off your many layers, one great way to warm up is by drinking hot milk.

If you’ve ever warmed up milk, you’re familiar with the layer of skin that forms on the top regardless of whether you use the microwave or stovetop.

This thin film is just milk proteins reacting to the heat and changing form so it’s perfectly safe to ingest, but still there are many people who find it unpleasant, somewhat like bread-crust haters.

Well, for those of you with an aversion to milk skin, never fear!

Zen-Noh, a federation of agricultural cooperatives in Japan, has come to your rescue.

On Dec 16, Zen-Noh updated their official Twitter account (@zennoh_food) with a foolproof solution to rid yourself of that nasty milk skin forever.

How to Avoid Hot Milk Skin

To those of you trying to warm up milk:

Add in some sugar and mix well before heating in the microwave to avoid the skin from forming.

After all these years spent struggling against milk skin, I’m left dumbfounded.

Simple enough right?

A spoonful of sugar will make it difficult for the skin to form on top of your milk and add a bit of sweet taste!

Reactions From the Web

  • I often drink hot milk late at night while working or studying, so I’ll try this out next time.
  • WOW! I tried it out and it’s true! Thanks to Zen-Noh for the tips.
  • How interesting! But I actually prefer hot milk with the skin.
  • I always added sugar afterwards! I’ll add it before next time.

Sounds like this trick was news for a lot of people.

So if you are anti-milk skin, be sure to try this out next time.

Supposing you don't want to adulterate your milk with sugar?

Just remove the skin with a spoon.

The geniuses who brought us this are the reason why farm products are so expensive and unimaginative.

Not to mention adding totally unnecessary empty calories to your otherwise healthy drink.

Simplest solution is to bring the milk up to heat slowly while stirring. No skin, unless you leave it in which case it will form on your cup, but the solution to that is even easier. Drink it!!

Drinking milk is awful enough. Adding sugar... ew.

When I was a kid, it was admited in my family that the skin was for me and the liquid for cats or whoever wanted. Note that milk was from my (grandparents') cow Marguerite so it had to be fully boiled for safety.

Now people that buy packs just don't need to overheat and they don't get any skin.

The skin atop your warm milk or pudding is the best part. Just slurp it off!

Interesting reaction. I'm 63 and drink cold milk with most meals. It's not for everyone apparently. I do recall a German innkeeper react with horror when poured a cup of cold milk to drink. I can still hear her cries of "nein, nein" and the look on her face.
