Great cookbook, but not the first published...not even close

American Cookery, by Amelia Simmons, is the first known cookbook written by an American, published in Hartford, Connecticut in 1796

The next truly American cookbook to be considered important was The Virginia Housewife by Mary Randolph, published in 1824.

It is my favorite cooking book. I read somewhere that it was the very first cookbook published in the U.S. The classics never lose their appeal.
