Godiva teams up with Mister Donut for new series of chocolate doughnuts in Japan

As Japan’s premier doughnut chain, Mister Donut can pick and choose who it collaborates with, giving us fantastic limited-edition releases from Pokemon, acclaimed pastry chef Toshi Yoroizuka, and esteemed Kyoto green tea specialists Gion Tsujiri.

Now the chain is teaming up with Belgian-based chocolate company Godiva for the very first time, giving us a range of doughnuts that contain Godiva chocolate in the dough and the toppings.

Inspired by chocolate gâteau, there are four new varieties coming our way, promising to deliver a moist, melt-in-your-mouth texture with the use of a “premium chocolate doughnut dough”.

▼ Ganache Chocolatfève

Bitter ganache and whipped ganache are sandwiched within this doughnut, which is finished with a rich chocolate coating and pearl chocolates for an elegant look.

▼ Praline Chocolat

This doughnut has a coating of whipped cream and rich roasted almond praline, and is topped with candy almonds and icing sugar to add “a touch of glamor”.

▼ Caramel Chocolat

A luxurious squeeze of salted butter caramel cream sits upon this chocolate doughnut, with a sprinkling of cocoa powder to finish. The rich sweetness of chocolate and salted butter caramel combines for an addictive salty sweet flavor.

The crowning jewel of the collection, this sweet has been made with an original premium chocolate pie dough specially developed for this collaboration. Containing a centre of almond cream and chocolate combined with custard cream, this doughnut has a similar crispy texture and taste to a Galette des Rois, the “King Cake” commonly eaten in France on January 6 to celebrate Epiphany, or “King’s Day”, so-called as it was said to be the day when the Three Kings visited the Christ child, according to Christianity.

Galette des Rois are commonly sold with a crown, which is to be worn by the person who finds the fève, a small decoration, hidden inside the cake. While this doughnut doesn’t come with a fève, it does come with a small crown, as a cute nod to the cake that inspired it.

The three ring doughnuts retail for 330 yen each for eat-in or 324 yen for takeout, while the Galette Des Rois doughnut retails for 363 yen for eat-in or 356 yen for takeout.

Alternatively, you can buy all four doughnuts, and receive a specially designed paper bag to carry them in, for 1,328 yen.

The new doughnuts will be available at Mister Donut branches around Japan from January 11 until early February, and according to the chain, a second yet-to-be-seen set will be making its debut on January 31.

Some of the best news of the year!

Why would they do it? I think this would diminish Godiva's image more than it would raise Mister Donut's. Maybe that is why I am not in marketing.

What I would give to try these. They look like fabulous eats. Back here at the states, Mr. Donut's has, well, nothing special. Same ol' same ol'. I wish I'd never left Japan. They do food like no one else.

Obviously I will not partake in the eating of these products. I guess the target audience so to speak is ladies and small children. We all know how the ladies have a sweet tooth don’t we, lol.

Always think about what our are eating and what its doing to your body especially if you have a sedentary lifestyle.

There's a Mr Donuts dangerously close to my home and might have to drop in to sample each one of these and take some home for the wife. Too good to eat them alone...

Yes, my life is great because I look after myself. It’s not boring, it’s knowing about nutrition and using your body. I eat stuff that isn’t healthy in moderation and that’s the key, don’t live off the stuff.

Being healthy even as aging is great, no trips to hospitals except for accidents, no daily meds etc, I’d recommend for all who can be bothered.

Even healthy people can have a serious illness like cancer. Don't count your chickens before they hatch. Annual health checks and PSA tests for men.

I prefer 豆腐ドーナツ to be honest.

Cook them in the air-fryer for an even healthier culinary experience.!.

And having Godiva branded products in konbinis is doing well for the brand?

Anyhow, I am looking forward to try them.

I am so getting a box of this and splurge!

Would be interested in reading an article about the history of this lacklustre chain.

My partner has a retro coffee cup from Mr Ds, she got donkeys years ago.

Who remembers the 肉まん they used to do?

My wife used to work at Mr D while she was at university, and had loads of merch at one point. No idea where it all is now.

The niku-man weren't bad, and I loved the curry donuts they used to do in the early 2000s.

I'm picking up a couple of these donuts now and taking them home for lunch.

Gene, as promised, and reporting live.

Two bites into the Ganache Chocolatfève--not bad. Would have preferred none of the frosting in the middle.

Now for the Caramel Chocolat--much for flavorful than the other.

A bit sweet, so just giving this two bites also.

..and the other 2?

Sold out.

Will hit it again this weekend though.
