Japan’s chocolate mint beer returns for Valentine’s Day

When a snack trend takes off in Japan, it really takes off. For example, when bubble tea was all the rage, we started to see novelties such as boba pizza and boba beer.

One trend which seems to never die down is Japan’s love for mint chocolate. Apart from the usual mint chocolate flavors which appear from time to time, there’s also plenty of unexpected offerings. This includes mint chocolate dango and mint chocolate butter.

One popular mint chocolate crossover treat is returning again for this year. Next month will see the re-release of the mint chocolate beer, to be sold in limited quantities.

Hoppin Garage’s Otona no Choco Minto (chocolate mint for adults) made a big splash last year with fans of the classic flavor combo. It lives up to its name, coming in at 5% alcohol, a bit higher than the average 4.5% for beer.

In regards to its February return, the makers have pointed out that it’s the perfect treat for Valentine’s Day, an occasion which is inextricably linked with chocolate in Japan. While it’s good on its own, it can also be used as a base for an ice cream float, or an ice cream topping.

This sweet beverage can currently be preordered in various quantities on Hoppin’ Garage’s website, and it will be released on Feb 8.
