Japanese pizza chain starts nationwide delivery of for-dogs pizzas

It’s hard to find a more broadly popular food than pizza. Loved by young and old, it’s transcended barriers to the extent that it’s partially in its own cultural class, and even people who aren’t otherwise into Italian food can still find joy in a slice.

So if all sorts of people love pizza, doesn’t it stand to reason that dogs might love it too? That’s the idea behind Japanese pizza chain Pizza-La’s Wanko (“Doggy”) Pizza, which is finally available for delivery nationwide.

While Pizza-La offers a full range of topping choices for its for-human pizzas, the Wanko Pizza is currently available in only one variety. To throw actual dogs a metaphorical bone, though, the Wanko Pizza is based on Pizza-La’s teriyaki chicken pizza, the chain’s best-seller, and is topped with teriyaki chicken, corn, mushrooms, and shredded seaweed. There is one big difference, though, which is that the Wanko Pizza uses chicken instead of dough for its crust, giving it an extra-meaty quality to please canine palates. And don’t worry, the Wanko Pizza, which was developed in cooperation with Japanese pet food company Comif Deli, is made with ingredients and seasonings that are healthy for dogs to consume, so it’s not like you’re giving your pooch people food.

The Wanko Pizza first went on sale in 2021 but was available only in pet supply stores. A year later a limited number of select Pizza-La branches began offering it, and thanks to the positive reactions from pets and their owners, the for-dogs pizza is available at Pizza-La branches nationwide. Be aware, though, that the Wanko Pizza ships frozen, and takes either six hours in the fridge or around two minutes in the microwave to dethaw (Pizza-La says to serve it at room temperature, not piping hot).

The Wanko Pizza is priced at 880 yen, measures 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) in diameter, and can be ordered online here.

Almost a textbook definition of a decadent society.

Pizza-la is my least favorite of the pizza delivery chains in Japan. Plus, they rarely have promotions like the others, so they are more expensive, as well. As such, we don't often order from there.

Add to it the recent death of our big dog, and we have little reason to start ordering now. I really wish this was available, or if it was, that we knew about it, so she could have enjoyed it in her waning days.

Can you explain what is decadent about treating your loved ones, human or not, to things they enjoy?

Dogs will happily eat vomit so charging idiots ¥880 a pop for this is good business.

Your dog may enjoy the pizza, just the same as your dog would enjoy a cheap bone from the butcher, an ice cream cone dropped onto the sidewalk or some blueberries from your morning breakfast. Your dog doesn't care about the presentation of any of these things. Paying to have this "special dog pizza" delivered to you is pretty much the definition of decadence. I don't care one way or the other if you chose to order this pizza for your dog but neither do I understand how you can't comprehend or pretend not to comprehend how decadent this is.

The term "decadent" when used to describe food, typically refers to something that is luxuriously self-indulgent, often rich, and lavish in taste and presentation. This term has its roots in the decadent movement of the 19th century, which was characterized by an ethos of self-indulgence.

Your dog(s) may not care. But, mine have always loved "human food" more than dog food or droppings.

Because there's nothing decadent about an 800yen treat. It's no more decadent than feeding them premium dog food over some garbage from Walmart or DonKi.
