McDonald’s Japan’s new Avocado Beef, Chicken, and Shrimp burgers look surprisingly good

When you’re based in one of the biggest, most convenient cities in the world and spend the majority of your day online with instant access to more information than your ancestors probably had in their entire lifetimes, you tend to lose the ability to concentrate long enough to prepare a real meal, and it’s easy to give in to the greasy and syrup-topped temptations that wink at you from the branches of McDonald’s and Starbucks located on every other street corner.

McDonald’s Japan’s new Avocado Beef, Avocado Chicken, and Avocado Shrimp burgers actually look pretty good.

Set to go on sale all over Japan from the end of May, the beef, chicken, and shrimp burgers will retail for 399 yen each.

The Avocado Beef burger comes with sliced onion, chunks of avocado, a slice of cheddar cheese, and a dollop of wasabi sauce, all topped off with two rashers of bacon. The other two, as well as swapping their main ingredients for chicken or shrimp, respectively, are served with avocado and spicy cobb salad sauce, with the chicken sandwich also receiving a cheeky slice of cheddar.

All three of the new creations are sandwiched between slices of floury ciabatta bread — itself a genuine step up from the usual limp McBuns, in this writer’s humble opinion.

We can’t comment on the quality of the included ingredients themselves, but these burgers definitely look pretty good in their promotional snaps, and it’s nice to such big chunks of a healthy fruit like avocado (no, really, it’s a fruit) in a fast food offering, so we’ll be sure to check them out as soon as they become available.

Judging McDonald`s food by what it looks like in promotional photos is about as reliable as judging living standards in North Korea based on state TV broadcasts, they always make it look way better than the real thing.

I just tried the "Abokado Beepu" a few days ago, and it was DELICIOUS! Everything about it made me want another one. The avocado, the sauce, the new type of square bread, and I'm not sure but I think the burger patty was square. But, I only got a glimpse of it as I crammed it into my face.

It might be good but nobody makes avocado burgers better than Kua Aina.

The pictures of new burgers sometimes tempt me, but more often than not, if I do go for something new at McD, I regret not just sticking to a regular Big Mac.

I love Japan McDonalds, so much nicer than Aussie McDonalds, but not so sure about these burgers..

Zobo, is that owl avatar from Enoshima?

Thanks for the link. That has really put me off. If that's not false advertising, I don't know what is!!

It's just more of the same corporate food that is ruining the planet and people's healthy. Go buy the original ingredients, plan ahead a little, and make your own. McD only has the health of their bottom line at heart, not your health.

I agree with Cleo. My wife bakes delicious organic wholemeal rolls which sheb figured out are cheaper than the awful white chemical things you find in most supermarkets.

Back on topic please.

There is.

Eat whatever McDonalds product you like, as much as you like.

Just don't swallow it!

Tried the avocado chicken 30 min. ago, Swallowed it, not that bad, still standard and wasn't that bad. One for Japan!

'Not that bad' sounds like it wasn't that good either.

Meaning: that it wasn't "In n' Out" quality if I need to make a comparison, but then again, NOT much is when it comes to their burgers! But yes, I would buy it again, therefore it passed my tastebuds.

Good idea to get away from the US states burgers. I often make those type at home. Great morning food.

Unfortunately it doesn't taste as good as it looks. I've had the same style burger (avocado, bacon, cheese) at other places, and it was delicious! So when I saw it at McDonald's, I had high hopes, but was quite disappointed.

They may "look" good, but I am not biting. What little fake or cheap avocado I have had at chain stores etc. has been quite enough. Real fresh avocado is delicious, but I am sure this stuff will be bland as can be. Hard to believe people are easily fooled.

You're right about that senseiman, it definitely wasn't as tall as it is portrayed, but the taste made me overlook it.

My wife and I were tempted to try these a few days ago. Then we punched the names in to see the reviews. You can see some photos yourself here: http://matome.naver.jp/odai/2139771089053794501

While I'll confess to eating McDonald's here more than I ever would in the states, and some of their "specialty" burgers have been alright, I think I'll pass this time around.

Something tells me that those "fresh" avocados are a botulism disaster waiting to happen.

Had the avo-beef today, mostly bland, not a lot of flavor, but BK has been doing this one for years and much better. Also had Mac double-cheese burger, much more satisfying, real meat-like flavor. This all being said: A for effort for Mac, B for taste. BK is ten times better for the price, Kua Aina No. 1 if price is no object.

The fact that the avocado is diced an anaemic tells you something... Might as well pay extra for at least some level of standards like at Kua'aina!

I actually liked this burger. I also had the beef, but will go back to try the chicken some day. The avocado was tasty, and the wasabi mayo sauce had zing. Not bad!

@bertie

If you don't like it, instead of denegrading and harping on the burger and making accusations you're NOT entirely sure of, go out and check it out yourself, try it and then share with us if the burger is good or not. Remember: food are subjective.

But it's hard to buy decent (almost impossible) whole wheat bread in Japan for starters.

To me that burger above looks surprisingly uncooked.

I eat McDonald's fairly regularly, 4-5 times per month, and my health is not destroyed.

I guess there is a right way to do it.

I had the shrimp this weekend and I liked it as well as I like their normal shrimp sandwich.

To be fair, I was 8 drinks in at that point, so I wouldn't trust my judgement.

Sure a delicious recipe, if only the ingredients were wholesome and the portion actually made you full.

ahem Bubby's.

meat-like flavor

Yup!

In other words, with a taste SIMILAR to meat.

Promotional photos always look good. If the actual product is much different from the usual mass-produced, freeze-dried and microwaved gunk with cheep grease that these shops usually offer is something to be found out first.

Zobo; OMG!, that looks DISGUSTING!, I would rather eat the paper sign.

Interesting that the headline says that they look "surprisingly" good. This implies that most of the "hamburgers" produced by MacDonald's don't.

I tend to agree with Philip about the "greasy and syrup topped temptations," that consist of reconstituted offal slapped into a genetically modified "wheat" bun.

Adding avocados is definitely a step up, though I wonder if this doesn't make them a bit difficult to eat. I can see chomping into one of these and bits of pulpy green vegetable flying out in all directions.

32 people arguing about the quality of McDonalds? Goodness. You've all either been in Japan too long or never had any taste in food to begin with.
