McDonald’s offering massive 48-McNugget bucket in Japan, but true idol fans need to eat 1,200

Why stop at 40 McNuggets when you could order 48, or just keep going into quadruple digits to really support your favorite Japanese idol singer?

Most of the time, Japan is pretty moderate in its calorific consumption. Case in point: While McDonald’s regularly sells its Chicken McNuggets in 4, 6, 10, 20, or 40-piece packs in the U.S., the chain’s permanent menu in Japan only has five and 15-piece options.

But when Japan is feeling gluttonous, it really goes all out, with the latest example being McDonald’s new promotion in Niigata. Next month, you’ll be able to walk into any McDonald’s in the prefecture and order a gigantic 48-piece bucket of McNuggets, the chain’s largest chicken offering ever.

However, there’s a good chance many people ordering this extra-super-sized item won’t even be that hungry. That’s because the other selling point is that the 48-piece McNugget bucket is a promotional tie-in with newly-formed J-pop idol unit NGT48, the Niigata-based sister group of idol megagroup AKB48.

Each 48-McNugget container comes decorated with one of two images of NGT48’s members. As if that wasn’t enough idol appeal, McDonald’s 38 Niigata branches will also be using paper tray covers that bear the singers’ likenesses, and each 48-McNugget order comes with one of 25 limited edition NGT48 commemorative cards, meaning a minimum of 1,200 McNuggets that superfans will have to eat to collect the entire set.

The NGT48-Piece Chicken McNugget pack goes on sale Dec 1 for 1,800 yen, and will be available until McDonald’s runs out of the special packages.

McDonald's are doing that badly that they need an AKB / NGT / whatever48 tie-up to try and drum up business. Is this the best you can do, guys?

Pick the bucket. Lick the bucket. Kick the bucket.

Sensei258,

Perhaps it's meant for a group rather than an individual. Regardless I intend to wash all 48 pieces down with an ice cold Coca-cola.

DRV FTW!

Awesome and delicious!

This is what Japanese food is really about!

At about 100 mg sodium per nugget, that 48 piece bucket has more than 3 times the recommended daily intake of sodium
