McDonald’s to open fancy pop-up restaurant in Tokyo for one night only

Around the world, fast food chain McDonald’s prides itself on its trademark menu, designed to feed the needs of busy customers on the go.

For one night only, though, the giant company will slow down the pace by taking a step into luxury dining, with a special multi-course meal that includes a platter of patties, a vichyssoise made from French fries and a gelée made with McDonald’s vegetables.

The special pop-up eatery, called Restaurant M, is set to appear at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo on July 27. The event is designed to showcase the new summer range of “Fresh Mac” burgers, which sees the Bacon Lettuce Burger, Chicken Fillet Burger and Fillet-O-Fish Burger given a “fresh” upgrade with the addition of vegetables like tomato, onion, lettuce, red cabbage and yellow bell pepper (or capsicum, as diners with particularly advanced vocabularies might insist on calling it).

The dining experience is limited to 10 groups of 20 lottery-winning diners, who will be seated at fancy tables complete with menus, napkins, silverware, and wine glasses filled with iced tea.

Two of the most inventive items on the menu are the gelée made with Fresh Mac vegetables and a dainty-looking French fry vichyssoise. Encasing lettuce, avocado and bell pepper in gelatin instantly translates into high-class eating.

A number of patties form a unique tasting platter, complete with a variety of dipping sauces. The fresh vegetables feature as the highlight of the dish. For the main course, customers will dine on a full-size Fresh Mac burger. With a knife and fork.

Dessert is a silver spoon re-interpretation of the popular Oreo McFlurry, served with a good helping of berries.

Wow. McDonald's has so jumped the shark - they don't seem to have a clue who they are or why people eat there. The end of an era. Their new offerings are something you might expect from an off-brand food franchise in the former Soviet Union, or maybe in an institutional setting, such as a prison or reform school.

How can a company that can't even manage fresh lettuce, onion or tomato on their standard products expect to play at "gourmet"?

This is a goofy but fine idea for a publicity stunt, but the fact that it's to "showcase the new summer range of “Fresh Mac” burgers," - essentially the same burgers they always sell, but with a few more very standard vegetables - just highlights the fact that they haven't had a decent idea for a new sandwich in years.

McDonald and fancy restaurant. They just do not go right in the same sentence.

A free meal is still a free meal. The event design is pure whimsy. BigM is almost playing to the criticism, the script is flipped. What BigM learns in this setting isn't about the restaurant of today, it's all about the restaurant of tomorrow.

BigM is creating a media aquarium promo with live happy 'fish' having a free meal with a knife and fork. Good on 'em

I think it is not actually going to be free. "Lottery-winning" just means that participants are selected between a handful of people who applied through their website.

Good point, there wasn't a reference to pricing and "The event is designed to showcase the new summer range of “Fresh Mac” burgers" but it doesn't say free. Still, it's all designed to benefit BigM, would they charge to be in their media aquarium?

Even with the "fancy" sauces, will Mac still serve those fries that never rot because they have no nutritional value, even for bacteria and sever hamburger meat that has been cleansed with ammonia, which is usually used to clean floors?
