If you're a shark, the most-feared predator is the human being.

Now, just yesterday I had a nice big bowl of shark fin soup. I kid you not. Then after that I had more shark fin mixed with chinese noodles. I have to say it was delicious indeed.
I don't really care too much for sharks. If they fed on jelly fish I would love them. I can't stand jelly fish. We need to eat more of that.
I can't say I agree with a ban on finning. I love my shark fin soup. I think we should use everything though. Eat it all. Find a way to use it. I'm sure the surfers will be happy with the idea.

I like a good shark steak now and than. Solid meat similar to Barracuda.
Refuse to eat Shark-fin due to the "finning" which kills between 4-9 Million(estimated) sharks annually and has put a few species on the endangered list. The removal of the top-predator is also having a major impact on the seas eco-balance.
Now wait till the ladies and others find out that shark-fin is 99% Collagen, the demand will go up and we might see sharks becoming extinct before Tuna and Whales.
95% of all shark-fin is traded through Hong-Kong.
Said that I love Sharks and have often encountered them during dives in many countries.

Surprised this thread has had so few replies so far.
Would have expected quiet a few posters to have said something by now.
canadianblue:
Thx, for the Video one I hadn't seen yet.

I think almost all Brits know that Rock Salmon is a shark called a Dogfish. I knew that since a child. It has nothing to do with endangered sharks or finning.
NetNinja
@canadianblue I watched the video as you suggested. I'm a very fair person and I'm always willing to listen.
I'm just curious. It is a matter of how they are slaughtered or the quantity? Being religious and all, I believe that all animals were set upon this Earth and we were meant to feed upon them.
That whole Garden of Eden situation, well women really messed that up. We weren't supposed to eat that fruit. Everything else God meant for us to eat. We would have eaten just fruits and vegetables if we had listened to the man upstairs. I also believe that the human stomach was not really designed for meat / flesh.
I'm sorry but the video didn't really turn my stomach. I can't tell you why at the moment but I guess I have little sympathy for sharks. Blame the media.
If you are a marine biologists and suggest that we slow down then I respect that and I'll follow you. However for those families who make a living off the industry you can't expect them to go down without a fight. You're talking about taking food off their tables to protect a fish.
I still support humans. Where do you stand? You provided a video but not an opinion.

I am an Australian but have never heard of Rock Salmon (WTF?.) When we have fish and chips it is called 'Flake' and yes everyone is very much aware that it is shark... Damned delicious though!

Absolutely correct, in Australia shark is sold in fish n chip shops as Flake. Rock Salmon is the pommy name for shark sold in F&C shops. Also agree flake is one of the best eating fish there is.

Shark is very tasty, but quite bland. If it ever smells like ammonia though, toss it in the garbage.
I do like the fin soup, but have not had it in ten years.
As far as the surf goes, I never ran into any sharks here, and I have gotten back into recently. Muscles hurt though.

I am also very surprised by the lack of comments...I guess because sharks aren't considered a cute animal there aren't many activists out the trying to prevent their deaths. I am completely appalled at how they are finned and thrown back into the sea. If people want to eat shark, they should have to take the whole thing and find uses for as much of it as possible. Also, I am curious if it is very toxic to eat. Many people have voiced their concerns with eating sea preditors but why not sharks? Is there something I am missing?
Nessie
Same if you're a human being.

sakurala.
You are correct Shark-meat is very highly contaminated with mercury. Being the top-predator they already get a high accumulation via their daily diet, which already is contaminated.
Not sure what the levels are compared to Tuna, Whale, Dolphin, etc but I would assume similar.

This just happened to me too the other day! I went to a Chinese friend's house, made me some real nice food, I KNEW I had better not ask what was in it, there some some real chewey, white long stuff in the NABE, never had anything like it. SO I asked, and it was the sack of a male shark holding it's SEMEN! I knew I should have not asked and I could have gone home happy never knowing exactly what was in that soup!!
