Tokyo restaurant offering all-you-can-drink Asahi beer for 12 months

One of the most common questions that comes up about life in Japan is, “Is it expensive?” Often, the answer depends on a number of factors. For example, is beer expensive? Well, if you want to go hopping from bar to bar, where you’ll get charged a separate cover at each, then yeah, you’re probably going to find your wallet hurting before your liver.

On the other hand, at most izakaya, the pub-like restaurants that serve a wide variety of alcohol and food, shelling out an extra 2,000 yen or so will allow you to upgrade your meal to include unlimited booze. It can save you some serious cash if you’re looking to do some serious drinking, with the only downside being that most come with a two-hour time limit.

That is, unless you sign up for a plan that gives you unlimited beer for an entire year, like one restaurant in Tokyo is offering.

Brasserie Beer Boulevard is located near Shimbashi Station. That puts it close to one of Japan’s largest concentrations of office buildings, and also therefore packs of white-collar workers looking for an after-work beer.

On the menu, you’ll find all sorts of tasty fare like sausages and pork chops, plus more gourmet items including paella and steamed mussels.

But as you’d guess from the name, beer is where the owners’ deepest passions lie. Aside from craft beers, Brasserie Beer Boulevard has three of Japan’s most popular macrobrews on tap, in the form of Asahi’s Super Dry, Super Dry Premium, and Super Dry Black.

Thanks to its refreshing flavor and crisp finish, Asahi is the kind of beer you can drink glass after glass of, and if you take advantage of a special offer from Brasserie Beer Boulevard, you’ll only have to worry about paying once. The restaurant is currently offering a limited but undisclosed number of “One-Year Passports” that’ll let you enjoy as many Asahis as you’d like for the next 12 months.

The one small catch is that the offer is only good if you’re willing to drink in the restaurant’s standing area or seated at the counter. On the upside, there’s no stated limit on how long you can hang around or how many beers you can order. Granted, Brasserie Beer Boulevard’s one-year deal is more expensive than the two-hour versions ordinarily offered by their competitors, with a price of 29,800 yen. Still, in downtown Tokyo a draft Asahi will generally run you about 500 yen, if not more, so if you can see yourself drinking 60 beers this year, this offer will basically pay for itself.
