This monster from Lotteria is known as the Tower Cheeseburger and has 1,823 kilocalories. It goes on sale June 24 for a limited time. Cost: 1,400 yen. A smaller version with five beef patties costs 700 yen.

Good grief. I thought this may have been some sort of joke but then I found a youtube video of some guy eating one. He even took his own mayonaise to squirt over the thing. Horrific!
Zenny11
Uurrgh, my Arteries, my Blood-pressure, etc. Way more than my daily calorie intake too.
No Thanks, I say.
Tamarama
I feel crook just looking at the thing.....
TrouserEnthusiast
That looks nasty!!
NetNinja
If I remember correctly, Burger King did something similar. Wasn't it like The Windows 7 burger with 7 patties.
My friend consumed one....correction, he tried to consume a Windows 7 burger but it became dry quite quickly. The taste buds can stand the taste of beef only so long. Shabu Shabu is a perfect example. I don't know anyone who can eat Shabu Shabu more than 2 nights in a row.
Looking at the picture brings of memories of the movie "Seven" with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. Gluttony, Envy, Lust, Pride, Sloth, Greed and Wrath. TOEIC students here you go. Choose the best vocabulary word to match the picture above.
Guys, this article is interesting but I think the target of this article is not your opinion on whether or not this is disgusting. I think it's more of a lure to get you to Facebook click it so your friends can see this disgusting picture and of course it means marketing information as they discover who you are on Facebook or Twitter.
papigiulio
That cannot not be delicious at all. No wonder more and more Japanese people are starting to get obese.
Spidapig24
One question, WHY!!!!
It would taste like crap. Just because a burger has more meat and cheese doesnt make it a nice burger.
Oh and NetNinja, l can eat beef every day of the week as long as its decent not like the "beef" available in Japan. I find the beef here bland, tough, and stringy... Not nice at all
tokyokawasaki
Obviously aimed at the Americans living in Japan. This is just a little snack by US standards :)
Seriously though, there should be some form of national watchdog who responsibility is to monitor and prevented health hazards such as that stupid heart attack in a bun.
gogogo
Someone is going to die from eating that.... I guess metabol syndrome is no longer cool.
paulinusa
Not only long-term health but think what this would do to your digestion and stomach.
ReformedBasher
Finally something to satisfy my son until dinner time (Not kidding - he eats 2 burgers for lunch, minimum, and has no fat on him at all. Wish I had my teenage metabolism back...)
sharpie
Fast food should be taxed like smokes and liquor, cuz it does nothing but add to the health bill that we all pay for.
Spidapig, surprising comment. Ever see Food Inc.?
Buy cheap crap food, u get cheap crap quality.
PenelopePitstop
Trying to get rid of all that stock of Fukushima beef, Lotteria?
bass4funk
If you're going to die, then at least die with dignity and add about a pound of fries with that and hordes of ketchup, then at least it will be a good death of the highest caloric, fast food proportions!
Seriously, who the hell goes to Lotteria??? Out of all the fast food chains in Japan, Lotteria by far is the absolute worse!! The quality is not even an issue with this company. Like most people I enjoy a good burger now and then, but this trashy place is not even worthy of that! What junk! Who would even considering eating that???!
BurakuminDes
If that is indicative of the junk this "Lotteria" joint dishes up - remind me to stay the hell away! Agree with Sharpie - this pile of lard should attract at least a 2000 yen health tax...
YongYang
Is that legal? Won't sewage companies be filing litigation over that? It's amoral.
rainman1
@YongYang: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
Zenny11
Now if that was a tower of a Crispy Bacon sammy I could die happily eating that.
rainman1
@spidapig: You need to get out more - There are numerous places here where the beef is fantastic.

With 10 slices of Beef and cheese, it works out Yen 140 per slice without the bread. That is good business for them. There should be laws forbidding such unhealthy things. Zenny, agree that the meatguy has a really great selection of meat and of sausages for my cravings.
CruzControl
Woot!!! I am so going to get that. You haters can hate all you want.

I know what you are saying about Americans, but I am not like that. I weigh the same as I did when I graduated college in the 70`s.
Eat lite, walk a lot and surf...plus drink your shouchu.
That thing loks like a really disgusting slab of fat.
Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land
I like Lotteria personally. Quite delicious. They put pepper or something on their burgers. Better than McD's.
I think I'll give the 5 patty/700 yen version a try.
Virtuoso
These things don't happen in a vacuum. Like the US, Japan's middle class has been hit by the economic slump and people are much less concerned over the safety of foods. This monstrosity will fill their stomachs and leave them thinking they've obtained good value for money. I myself would prefer an onigiri rice ball with kombu and katsuobushi, which at least has no cholesterol and valuable minerals, washed down with green tea.
CruzControl
Interesting insight into your nakama. I can eat steak or BBQ ribs every day for the rest of my life wouldn't complain.
Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land
Sounds like you've gone native.
Why ruin some delicious water by turning it into green tea?
bass4funk
Hmmmm, so now we are stereotyping and pigeonholing ALL Americans as a collective? I had no idea that every single American near and far and in-between relished and loved with such great admiration the greasy hamburger. I'm sorry, we don't know any other food in the culture of food, just burgers. Well that cleared everything up for me! Funny thing is, I have never seen hardly ANY American frequent that establishment. I see mostly high school kids, Japanese and quite a few of them are rolly polly.
mackemack
I'm guessing it would not look too different on its' way out to on its' way in.
mackemack
And yet...it is strangley compelling. I'm drawn to it like a moth to a light.
TanakaTaro
I'm surprised no one has pointed out that Lotteria launched EXACTLY the same burger last year. Search google for "Lotteria Tower Cheeseburger" and you'll see that all of the results are from May 2010.
Last year it was just a standard cheeseburger that you could add extra patties for about 100 yen each up to a maximum of 10. If you went for 10 they discounted it to 990 yen if I remember correctly. So not only is the Lotteria marketing department rehashing old ideas, but they are also upping the price!
Serrano
Only 10 beef patties?
I am quite sure I'd not be able to get even the smaller version into my mouth.
@mackemack - It's not compelling, strangely or otherwise!
paulinusa
"I'm guessing it would not look too different on its' way out to on its' way in."
That was my point. Meat and protein binds you up. With this much meat I can see the potential for some excruciating pain.
TheQuestion
My only complaint is how dry Lotteria's stuff is. If I want a patently terrible burger, and rest assured I do, I want it dripping with grease with a side of onion rings and a 36 oz coke and I want it in 5 minutes. Then again this doesn't seem like that much to me, I'm a big guy. This is merely a challenge...I accept.
Bah only when I'm in polite company do I eat that light. Grew up in Detroit living off spam, Faygo, and sardines in tomato sauce. The fact I'm as healthy as I am is a miracle of modern science and good genes. I normally eat out when I'm in the Tokyo branch, otherwise my bento would be the size of a suitcase.
Zenny11
Lotteria burgers are so-so but they have some good items on their menu like sandwiches.
Can't walk past their branch in Nakano Sun-mall without son pulling me in for one of their milk-shakes. You can actually drink those using the straw vs. the McD version.
Neither me nor my son will partake in the Tower.
TuxedoMichael
I'd like to try it.
mackemack
@TuxedoMichael - That's the spirit!
Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land
I could use a little "binding" what with all the unbinding my high-beer diet gives me.
WilliB
Poor cow that had to die for this monstrocity,
Sawada2
That could feed my family for at least a week maybe two........lol
goddog
@virtuoso: Wash it down with green tea? Are you sure you want to do that.
Dennis Bauer
i am not a fan of Lotteria runny egg burger, i wish Burger king would come to the kansai area
chuckbello
It's official: Junk food is an integral part of Japanese diet. And I thought that nobody can do worse than the US when it comes to fast food.
steve@CPFC
dennis; Burger King is coming to Namba in July.
SuperLib
It's kind of funny to listen to some people talk about this burger as if its purpose was to fill the "10 patty burger" segment of the Japanese market.
People, it's called a marketing gimmick. They just got free press from JT and other outlets and this thread has 45 messages so far. Do you really think people are saying, "Gee, should I get the Tower burger or a combini sando? What do I really feel like today?" It's designed to shock, not to fool people into suddenly deciding that 10 patties sounds about right for lunch.
smithinjapan
You'll get a number of people who try this once (obviously), strictly for the novelty. There is simply no need to eat so much meat, and I really can't see there being the desire to eat something that is obviously not a sandwich.
smithinjapan
"...and I really can't see there being the desire to eat something that is obviously not a sandwich."
Which is to say this tower burger is not a sandwich (I can of course see people wanting to eat non-sandwich foods).
keika1628
Not worth it , you only get one slice of a pickle gherkin and a dash of sauce ,
ihavegreatlegs
They should have called it the Sky Tower Burger, and put a little plastic keitai replica on top.
Cos
They had them already a few month ago. I didn't see anyone ordering. I guess it's like pizza in the US. People share one with 4-6 persons, so nothing special. Still that's disgusting to see it, They had them on those huge posters. Yuck... And in times when food-binging induced obesity becomes a major social problem over the world, isn't that silly ?
SamuraiBlue
I wonder how they are going to wrap that thing if somebody ordered it for takeout?
bass4funk
Boy, you must not be well traveled, yes, the USA is still the leader in junk food, but make No mistakes, there are other nations getting very, very close and might even overtake us. By the way, if you don't think that Japanese don't already have junk food, you have another think coming. Remember, it's not always entirely the food, it's also about portion control.
benhur
NiCE !!! :D can't wait for it to come out so i can sink my teeth in it!!! YUMBO!!!
TokyoTanuki
Urgh! That looks so bland..
The biggest burger I ever ate was a 1 pounder from my local burger shop. It had 4 patties, a fied egg, a couple of slices of bacon, a slice of pineapple, mushrooms, salad, cheese, mayo, pickels.. and more ingredients that I fail to recall... absolutely delicious.. In comparison this is a big sweaty cowpat of a burger...
CapnSinbad
Agree that Lotteria has abominable burgers: buns dry, meat salty and overcooked, hard to choke down. Also agreed that the people I see eating these monstrosities are always Japanese men. You don't think J-men can pack away fast food ? Go to any Shakey's for the lunch smorg and you will see dozens of salarymen piling there plates as high as the ceiling, gorging themselves and going back for more again and again. It beggars belief to see.
condor
Comm'on guys. Do not be that harsh. Otakus also need to get out of their stinky 1DKs and enjoy life once in a while. Like once in every 5 years. Hope this burger puts them on the right trail for the cardiovascular heaven.
hatsoff
C'mon now people, junk food is only junk if you eat it every day. I like the look of this. I reckon if I eat a Tower Burger just once a week I should be okay.
hatsoff
.......yes
Omaemona
I remember how the Jack In The Box Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger made me feel after (gross) and that had like around 920 kcals, 62 grams of fat, and 1800 mg of sodium. Can only imagine what this must be like.
Serrano
Burger King's 420 yen Whopper with extra lettuce, onion and pickles at no extra charge rules.
Cliffy
I have seen bigger burger on one of those shows. If I recall, the patty is about 8-10 inches in diameter and about 1-2 inches thick.
Jimny1216
Just take along 4 friends (one with a large purse) 8 slices of bread...presto you all have a double cheeseburger for lunch. :) JK of course......unless.....
Joseph Fisher
Oh Yeahh!!!!!!!! Instant heart attack! Does it come seasoned with a side of cigg butts ; )
Heinrich Curtis
C'mon Tokyo, not all Americans are fat and don't care....just most of us (I am thankfully not in that group). And as for a watchdog group: No one is MAKING you buy it and eat it; it's your choice to make the attempt.
nath
I had one the last time it came out. It's big, but nowhere near as big as the advertisements imply. Taste-wise, ... ... hm.
naruhodo1
Its a fun way for teens to have eating contests with either size. I came in 2nd a few years back. It could also be a fun way for a family to share it and have fun with it.
lucabrasi
@hatsoff
As long as you don't eat anything else! ( And take plenty of vitamin/fibre supplements.)
Yubaru
I wonder....could I get it with bacon lined between the patties? Mmmmmm..........looks good.
garywolf@gol.com
Looks like a heart attack waiting to happen. :-) What's the calorie count?
himehentai
haha thats more than I eat in entire day (calories) and its pretty amazing.
I have come to realize that the majority of young Japanese people do not eat healthily at ALL. All carbs and no vitamins. Some of them are beginning to get fatter, however many of them are not. Its the ones who look thin but eat crap who will probably drop dead first.
Whatever though ... If people want to eat this, then let them. Its their funeral.
Samantha Ueno
Last year it was cheaper...1,000 yen. My friends and I ate 1 per person, with fries. It was pretty good but very greasy...and if you eat it for lunch you don't need dinner.
nath
I can just imagine this thing toppling during an earthquake and wiping out my coffee and my dessert. I'm sticking to low-rise food.
ihavegreatlegs
If you call up and order one will they give you 10 yen when you pick it up like at MOS burger?
Disillusioned
Ah, yes! The healthy Japanese diet. A heart attack in a bun, indeed!
