Try some dessert oden

Oden is a popular Japanese dish, containing all kinds of ingredients cooked in a special broth of soy sauce, sugar, sake, etc.

However, a new type of oden, “sweets oden” (980 yen), has lately attracted attention, according to Walker Plus website.

At first glance, it looks like any other oden dish. You see steam rising from the small pot, and expect it to contain winter veggies, eggs, and fish cakes. But instead, this pot has fruit such as slices of apple, orange and kiwifruit in the broth. The broth is made from an oolong tea base with fragrant olive wine, and other spices. Besides sliced fruit, rice-flour dumplings and sweet red bean jam dumplings are also in the pot.

This new type of dessert oden was created by a pastry chef at Jiyugaoka Sweets Forest, located in a dessert-themed mini-mall in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo.

The dessert oden will be sold for a limited time until March 14 as part of the “HOT! Hotto sweets 2012” campaign.

@sillygirl LOL....you're so silly!

Oden is probably my all-time favorite Japanese dish...especially when my friends and I were freezing our sorry butts off in the shabby Tokyo Uni dormitory. The dessert oden sounds brilliant, and I'd love to try making some when I get back to a colder climate.

I will have a feeling of nausea for one week, after reading this. JT should think of people's health before publishing such terrible articles and pictures.

They could make it look (and probably taste) better if they left out the tea. Then it wouldn't be dessert oden, but Japanese-style fruit compote.

I could live with that. In fact, I think I'll try it at home.

No tea.

I am willing to try it, but it sounds weird.

how creative, what's next green tea ice cream?

The gall, describing it like it's a new creation! On behalf of East Europeans and their compotes, I am offended! That said, I love Love LOVE oden, but never liked compote... I shan't be trying this.

daisan - they do have green tea, even in the US a lot of places (including many grocery stores) sell it.

Lovenot - " this pot has fruit such as slices of apple, orange and kiwifruit in the broth. The broth is made from an oolong tea base with fragrant olive wine, and other spices." that sounds pretty friggin healthy to me, especially compared to most places that seem to only serve pastries

Personally, I really hate tradiational oden, mostly because of the fish cakes, but this sounds quite interesting and worth a try. Thanks for the reccomendation.

Natto is healthy too but is still disgusting.

oden is nice and cheap at the konbini....but I can't see myself paying for this...even if it does look good.
