Earlier this month, McDonald's Japan released their popular winter seasonal burger, the Gurakoro (Gratin Croquette Burger). This year they decided to fancy things up a bit, however, by offering a new "Koku Umami Angus Beef Bolognese Gurakoro" (Rich Umami Angus Beef Bolognese Gurakoro) in addition to the standard Gurakoro.

Hoping to find out what makes the new burger stand out, we headed to our local McDonald's and gave the saucy and crispy Gurakoro a try.

At first appearance, the burger does not look all that different from the classic Gurakoro. However, opening up the buns reveals just how rich and thick the new Bolognese sauce is, which features heavy chunks of ground Angus beef and slowly simmered onions.

Biting in, we found the addition of sauce to be a perfect newcomer for the winter menu star. The almost dessert quality of the the croquette's inner creamy white sauce, shrimp and macaroni plus a very rich Bolognese sauce seemed to mix perfectly. In particular, the tomatoes and red wine flavor of the Bolognese seemed to really fit the crisp and crunch of the croquette for warming winter treat.

It's only available for a limited time, but those looking for a burger to warm up this holiday season with an extra meaty kick will find one in McDonald's Japan's "Koku Umami Angus Beef Bolognese Gurakoro" (Rich Umami Angus Beef Bolognese Gurakoro).

I wonder if you have to say all of “Rich Umami Angus Beef Bolognese Gurakoro croquette burger“ when you order?

The name isn’t long enough.

It needs at least 5 more descriptive terms.

Just another junk burger... but they put a lot of effort in the fancy name.

Because "simple is best", as they say here.

"There is a hell of allot [sic] going on there. Too much."

Down-voted for misspelling 'ALLOT' (apportion).

For those who downplay every burger as trash food I say "get a life." You shouldn't live on them but an occasional indulgence won't kill you and might even put a smile on your face.

Once in a while, Only Limited @ Mac isn't bad for quick brunch or snack.

Where’s the beef!

It looks like a deep-fried greasy catastrophe, No Thank You! Japan now has over a few hundred independent and original gourmet burger shops that will put all of these chains to shame, 20 years ago they were hard to find except for a few like the Nagasaki legendary Sasebo burger, but even that once infamous burger joint is being outdone by shops that are taking their burger skills to the next level. Once upon a time you could mock Japanese burgers as being crappy and they were for the most part, but not these smaller shops. You would think MDJ would take some lessons from these people when it comes to quality and presentation, but then again, we are talking about MD.

McDonald's signs should have an asterisks.

Although not so very much delicious, but in general it’s not so bad as you all might think. Just consider that they don’t want and can’t afford to kill or make sick all of the cheap workforce and legions of consumers keeping the economy and system running. In this regard you can eat all of it without so much doubting or having fears. Btw even famous presidents or stock investors quite often prefer their products, and surely not because of any delicious taste, but for personal safety and quasi balanced nutritional convenience.

Wasn't that bad. It was however, a tiny burger.
