Innate diseases that affect principally sensory organs like the ears and eyes are a very good target for gene therapy since they require low doses of whatever vector is being used in order to produce benefits, compared with systemic diseases this means a reduction of orders in magnitude in the resources necessary for each patient, the difficulty is that inherent risks are less likely to be justified ethically since the life of the patient is not in danger.

Fortunately recent advances in the safety of the delivery of gene therapy is making these treatments much easier to be allowed, for the benefit of patients that had no option but now may be cured in a few years.
