One thing I don't get about Vegans is why they are so nice to animals and so nasty to human beings.

@BertieWooster Some vegetarians/vegans insist their pets (cats, dogs) follow their diet. Not so nice.

Those hilly people living in hills/mountains don't know anything about these Vegans, Saturated Fats, B12 or whatever the name is, they have always been lived healthily up to 70, then few wear and tear up to 90.

The most important thing they know is that they feel good making their own food from farming to dishes and they know their body absorbs it happily and that makes them healthy.

Extreme diets such as veganism and animal-based keto are never good for the long term.

Eat a balanced, healthy diet with healthy fats, lean meats, and plenty of good carbs and veggies/fruits. Kind of like the Mediterranean diet or what they eat in places like Okinawa who have such high percentages of centenarians.

Just say no to fad diets!

If your diet cannot provide essential nutrients it's a rubbish diet. Taking supplements is not a substitute for a balanced diet.

People with pernicious anemia can't absorb B-12 in any form taken orally. Pernicious anemia is from the lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

Excess B-12 is stored in the liver to be available to the body as needed. Most people have one or two years worth of stored B-12, so you won't be feeling effects for a while.

Lack of B-12 is a serious condition. It can lead to mania and depression (which is why some vegans are so mean... :) )

Fortified cereals and tofu contain B-12, so it is available without supplements.

For almost everyone, supplements are the snake oil of this era. Very few people need them and there is no reason to buy them unless you have been tested to see if you have a deficiency in the first place.

A vegetarian (not vegan) diet is the way, no vitamin deficiency in this diet. This vegan thing is basically to run down on vegetarian, and the lack of vitamin B12 in this diet is immediately highlighted as why not to switch to any kind of vegetarian diet.

As a vegan, I'm only nasty to those who are nasty to me. I have no problem with my non-vegetarian relatives, but when they're critical, I point out their obesity, diabetes and other medical conditions.

I’ve met a number of vegans over the past few years.

It’s silly to equate them all to the actions of a vocal minority. Most are just food conscientious, which is a good thing. Maybe their diet has some issues with it, but it’s a lot healthier than eating the fast food out there that so many others are living on.

Having just had bacon, eggs, etc, I don’t think I will bother going vegan. We as a species evolved away from being herbivores which gave us the necessary dense energy in our diets to support the development of a large brain, which has enormous energy demands on your body but critical evolutionary advantages. We are no longer adapted to survive just on veggi matter, though you don’t need to be a carnivore either. Balance in all things.

Japanese foods are usually not supplemented. "cereals" is the type of product (super-processed) the article warns you about. It's very uncertain to rely on food industry.

If you need (due to veg diet or because you're among the 5 to 40% among meat-eaters that have too low B12 levels), take the supplements that you can buy cheaply in any pharmacy or even kombinis in Japan. It's more complicated to buy (need to order most times) and more expensive (but still affordable) in France.

It was not designed for vegans particularly, but because for most deficient people, eating tons red meat or liver has no effect. The tablets/drops or even injections are well absorbed. So many J-centenarians are here because they've got medical advice and they have taken their supplements religiously for decades. Not just for B12.

You can see so many that look like 70 to 90 yrs old. They're in their 40's/50s. Vegan or not, we owe a lot to modern science.

Plants respond to stimuli, but they don't feel pleasure or pain.

If someone punches me or burns me, I TOO respond to those stimuli.

I am fine with people who want to cut out animal sources in their diet, go ahead, just don't preach to me about it, I can easily turn any "supposed" superiority on its head in no time.

Just eat sensibly folks & you are GOOD. Keep it reasonably balanced & you should be fine most of the time, too much of ANYTHING is not good

And the herbivores that are eaten by humans get their B12 from?.....

Vitamin B12 is produced by bacteria, not animals or plants. As such, animals, including humans, must obtain it directly or indirectly from bacteria. As most soils on farmland are deficient in this bacteria, then the animals bred for human consumption must be injected with it.

A diet free of animal products is only deficient in B12 if gut health is poor. Many meat eaters also have poor gut health and lacking in B12.

If it’s just for January then your body can recover with ease, but 1/12th of the year you and tens of thousands of others will have avoided animal food sources. I can kind of see some logic there.

Recent research has confirmed though that plants too respond emotionally to pleasure and pain, even emitting (inaudible to the human ear) sounds when threatened.
