Older people who frequent art galleries and museums, attend the theater and concerts may live longer than those who don't, a study in England suggests.

So, the research is suggesting that doing those things extends life?

The findings feed into the wider context of research into the health benefits of the arts, Fancourt said, particularly in light of how of many countries offer arts "on prescription" to support physical and mental health.

Yup. that is what they are saying. How about instead: people who naturally have more zest for life, are healthy and mobile, and curious about the world around them do those things more often than those who don't see the joys of life and prefer to vegetate in front of the TV or grumble at the kids playing outside.

It's the same regarding red wine. "Red wine drinkers live longer because of the healthy properties of wine." Or is it that wine drinkers usually lead non-stressful lives that allow them to relax with a glass of red?

Really? A study on something that has no real result? I can throw random statistics out there too. Let's see if it sticks. Watching "Simpsons" may help you live longer.

In a nutshell. Absolutely correct. I've seen that difference in the older people in my life. An interest in the arts can be a part of that, but it's the overall attitude that counts.

Just finished a glass of red, by the way.

Ok, been involved in the arts all of my life both making paintings and also attending exhibitions, concerts, plays, dance, endless music concerts. I would cross the world just to view a single painting or attend a concert.

All of the arts are a very important part of cultural life.
