Because a study on 40 people is not much more relevant than my own anecdotal story, I will go on rambling about my big problem with noise in the office. Not constant, machine-related one, but the human-related one. Yes, I am sensitive to sounds and Asia is not the best place to be, but when you try to focus on a difficult task, and the guy next to you decides he is hungry, and starts noisily slurping his ramen for 15 minutes... And we've also had this guy who was eating everything through a noisy slurping action: he was bringing the food close to his lips, then heavily slurp in the rice, pieces of meat, etc. Perfect for you trying to beat a tight deadline. Oh, and it took some time teaching the Chinese guys that, while it is good manners back home to noisily chew the food (kuchara thing), better stop that in my office. And while food break is only 1-2 times a day, then there is the guy(s) who somehow always has a runny nose and no tissues, and every 20 seconds or so heavily snorts. And no headphones policy for a while, until I convinced boss. Almost forgot: somehow the guys in my office considered normal to clip their nails, including toenails! at their desk. Rather than the noise, that was quite gross.

I am so happy to have my own office now!

Being subject to constant noise, from the workplace or otherwise, is stressful.
