'Vaccine nationalism' — Is it every country for itself?

This is not about countries. This is about big pharma and governments. If countries where having their way everyone would be cooperating or getting their butts booted from ever working for profit in their countries ever again.

This is all a fine example of how capitalism can resort to eating itself. Economies are taking a hit which will hurt big pharma in the long run as well as everyone else. Yet all big pharma heads can think about is short term profit goals that will limit the healing of people and economies. Its much like a gambler who has won big betting it all on "just one more" spin of the wheel.

Just wait for herd immunity like Sweden has done...

The world had a tradition of cooperating on major health care crises, until you-know-who came into office. Once he is gone, I am hoping that sanity and cooperation will return to the world stage.

First sensible comment about this. Companies should never be allowed to profit from life-saving vaccines. They are basically holding the world to ransom... pay up or die!

Well, sooner a country can vaccinate its population, sooner the country can reopen.

I think any government that is able to produce a vaccine is accountable to their own people. Trump, like any American president, is altruistic and will help other nations - Trump's budgets give billions away to foreign countries every year - even though it's borrowed from future generations. Those pre-emptively attacking him for selfishness should ask themselves if they would give a vaccine that their tax dollars paid to someone in another country before their own children or themselves? We all know the answer to that question.

People never learn from the mistakes of the past. Take away the profit incentive and people end up suffering tremendously for no reason. Look at the land reforms under Stalin and Mao. Huge numbers of people died using this same flawed socialist logic. People who don't learn from history are bound to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

Amen, brother. Remember what a travesty it was when the evil communist Dr. Jonas Salk invented the vaccine for Polio and then, instead of doing the responsible thing and jacking prices way up so that future inventors of Polio vaccines would have proper market incentives, he just gave it away?

That is why our communities are still ravaged by Polio, clearly. Communism just doesn’t work, people.
