What I find very interesting is that peanut allergies are on the rise in the west, but are not much of an issue here in Japan. What is accounting for this difference?

It's hard to say when nobody really knows what causes the allergies to begin with, but peanuts are not a major part of Japanese people's diets, so its kind of like asking why buckwheat allergy is common in Japan but not in the west. If it isn't a common thing to eat, then it isn't going to be a common allergy. The real question is simply "why are peanut allergies on the rise in the west?", and I haven't seen an answer for that yet.
