It may be too soon to call it a success (many therapeutic interventions that work in animal models fail to be useful for humans) but it seems like there are good chances this will become a good therapy to allow recovering addicts to leave their addiction.

Obviously other kind of support will be necessary (else addicts can just switch to another drug), but for countries like the US and Brazil, that have such a big problem with cocaine, even something with limited efficacy would be of great help and maybe save a lot of lives.

I wonder what effect it has on withdrawal and most importantly for recovering addicts, cravings.

According to the mechanism of action it would have no effect, withdrawal and cravings would be the same, the difference would be that even if they get some cocaine it would not help calm them.

I thought it was the long term crippling depression, not short term withdrawal symptoms, that drive most recovering coke addicts to use again?

The vaccine would not alleviate either, the only mechanism of action would be that the addict would not get high even after using cocaine again, this may help (because they would still be in withdrawal/depressed after using it, so there is no merit for them) but only if other forms of support are in place, else addicts could simply switch to other drugs.

It is a great innovation for drug users who want to kick the habit, but how of them do not want their daily doses of getting high.
